holy molly :s , so mmmm let me understand it, pirate if you don't get caught but don't pirate and play early because we can detect it, but if your leaked copy is legit go play, but if you pirate after release we may not detect it, and we will ban your gamertag but not your xbox but may be your xbox too so you must buy a new one  hey MS, you're amusing

So I'm confused. They aren't banning consoles anymore, they are just banning gamertags? Why would they take a step back with a less harsh policy?

Banning gamertags is worse. People just cut their loss and then go and buy a new console, mod it, and continue on their merry way. Banning their gamertag, they lose all of their achievements and the ability to play online with that account forever.

they could just ban anyone who played the game a week before release, and if you have a copy of your receipt you can prove you bought it and that a store broke the street date, in which case forces you to inform microsoft who broke street date.

Are you serious? Maybe it is just me being frugal (as usual) but $40 or $200 (for a new Arcade/Core) is a HUGE difference. For $160 dollars difference, I could care less about my freaking achievements. Do people take them that seriously?

From what we've been led to believe if a game is a retail build and passes CRC checks it's identical, no way to tell.

Unless MS just randomly ban then tell people to provide a receipt to get unbanned.

LOL bro,do you honestly believe a game that passes *insert that site here* check-up and if you have the latest FW mod you are safe ?

They CAN tell,it's matter of if they wanna ban you or not.My guess it's they ban the obvious ones like these guys with Forza III and Borderlands and the ones that play alot of hours on XBL and a lot of games. (with pirated games,of course)

Friend of mine had the very first FW mod and was never banned.Way before all these so cool "stealth" games.

You will get banned even if you're rolling with a 1.6 or 1.4 and a "good retail" copy.At least buy the games that you play online...I mean in general... not you, dude.

I buy games like RPGs because I know I get my monies worth, 60+hr's of gameplay is worth the $50-$60 price I pay.

Hell I just finished Star Ocean 4 few days ago, 75hrs total, and I payed $60 for it. The thing I don't like is paying $60 for a game that I'll probably finish in 12hr's max. In that case I rent or wait for it to drop to $20-$30.

well only the gamertag is banned and not theconsole but people still can get updates long as the cable is plugged in it will ask to update.

I love people who get in a hissy fit over people who play illegal games (check page one of this thread).

My xbox live gold expired last week, so I've played on my silver account with Forza 3. Still no ban, and I wont be renewing my gold subscription.

This xbox has become shared between me and my bro, and if it gets banned then I'll use his for when I get Forza in the post and any other games.

Yeah that's right MS are generous sometimes and say "Oh it's Christmas, little Jonny here has played 200 pirates games, but we'll be kind and not ban him".

Best explanation is if the rip checks out with retail discs it's essentially a perfect clone and you should be fine. Problem is there's been a lot of dodgy rips, many being massively anticipated titles, things like COD/Halo 3, etc, pirates can't help themselves and when a "P2P" rip hits half of them download it then get banned.

Because the banhammer tends to hit months/year later it causes mass hysteria and everyone trying to put the finger on what caused all the bans. There's so much **** talking during a banhammer stage, people claiming all they've done is install the firmware, not played any games, others saying they didn't touch any bad rips, etc.

All your friends, paid marketplace content, achievements, email address and everything can be tied to your live account.

One is a hole in your pocket from cash, the other is taking away a personal connection to your 360. I can easily see how account banning would deter pirates more.

All you need to have is hundreds of dollars worth of content purchased on the marketplace and that's a bitch. I am assuming there's no way to access that content ever again if you're banned?

a new xbox360 costs money... a new gamertag is like, a new email address away?

The Xbox is just money, the Gamertag has time, effort, reputation and your friends tied to it. I'd rather pay for a new 360 than lose my gamertag any day of the week.

Friends can easily be moved to a different account. If you can't remember most of them on there, well then you probably weren't that great of "friends". Reputation? You have got to be kidding me. If you think people look at your gamercard and say, "oh man he has 40,000 gamerpoints, he is amazing", then keep right on wasting your time, it isn't that big of a deal. The focus of your gamertag and XBL should be playing with your friends, achievements are just a fun thing to do if you have the time.

You're talking to the console faithful, cmon Mystic, don't be naive, achievement scores are crack cocaine to a lot of people.

Especially someone who pirates, they can download any game for free and rack up the points.

It's not about wasting time, it's about showing how banning gamertags would indeed worry a lot of pirates, that's just a fact.

I'm not debating that some people get games just for achievements. What I am trying to point out is that if achievements are crack cocaine for you, you have a serious problem. If you are downloading games you don't even like but know it has easy achievements, then I think you should get banned. You are doing something you don't even like for a gamercard that doesn't matter.

MS will be able to worry pirates, but not every pirate has a modded console so he can play as many games as possible for achievements. Most just want to play a few games they weren't going to buy others but were slightly interested in. For those people, $200 is a HUGE deterrent over a tiny thing like a gamercard.

So you can easily remember 80-90 people you've played with over the years, most people you still play with but many of them are 'seasonal' depending on the game / seasons and what they do. I think not and reputation has nothing to do with gamescore you oaf, it has something to do with past experiences and events in games - You know what, just a few months ago I met a guy I haven't spoken to an almost a year in Call of Duty 4 - He remembered my name from the Rainbow Six: Vegas days and how me and a few Swedish friends always had servers running Friday and Saturday, which made for some epic games, THAT kind of reputation - That's the things that puts a smile on your face, something no money can buy. So we ended up talking again.

The above example with meeting people you've played with has happened on numerous occasions, even got to a point where I was a familiar face around the Team Survival servers in RS: Vegas, talked to a ton of people and get some respect.

Yes, achievements are a part of it, I spent hours and hours getting 1000 / 1000 in CoD 4 and I'm extremely proud of that, same with a few other games, it's a personal gratification I don't want to lose either.

So (N) @ you.

Could have done without the personal attacks but whatever. That's great that you have 80-90 people on your friends list, but personally I keep mine in the 20-30 range to keep it more personal.

Your reputation was defined by how you played the game, not your name. Yes he remembered your name, but if you would have kept in contact with him if he was that great of a guy, you would remember his name and be able to re add him if you got banned or he could re add you under your new name.

It is great to have people respect you in some aspects, but respect in a video game in a video game? I guess I just don't get it, it is just a video game.

Well considering what you said, basically calling my an achievement ###### could be considered a personal insult as well. How am I supposed to keep in contact with that many people? You just automatically lose contact so some people by going separate ways gaming wise or one person goes away for months. This particular guy was in the army for over 6 months, how the hell am I supposed to keep in contact with him - It's just a great feeling meeting them again and talking about past experiences. No, you don't remember every freakin' player you ever play with and have fun with.

And guess you don't want to have respect online, considering they are people like you behind the screen, I can see how that's weird

And just to add to the whole GT thing, what about DLC and everything else tied to your account? Guess that's not important either.

You know the old phrase about "assuming" right? DLC isn't a concern for me because I have only purchased one XBLA game and one DLC package over three years which still doesn't even come close to $200.

About the whole respect issue, I get online to have a good time with friends and to have FUN. If somebody randomly remembers me and says, "Mystic you are a great guy", more power to him. Normally I'm too busy fending off jerks, like in COD4 for example who look at my rank and start berating me.

Yes, then you might also have to stop "assuming" a lot of things about other people and stop trying to bulldoze your opinion and ridicule others because you don't see eye to eye.
