The Man who Heads Activision-Blizzard: Robert Kotick

Recommended Posts

So the man at the head of the Activision-Blizzard table is Robert Kotick. Why do I bring this up? Well, thank you for asking, because I'd like to express my opinion and ask why a complete gamer-hating moron is presiding over the third largest video game publisher in the world.

Here's a little background on him:

As you can see, he's a pretty controversial figure. It really makes me wonder how this guy is where he's at. He's all about the big numbers.

He is a businessman. And his one of the best. What more can you say? People get in to developing games for one of two reasons. The love of the game. Money. His in the job to make money.

I really don't see why he's deemed as 'controversial' then by the gaming community.

+Vice has it right. Some people are in the gaming industry to make great games while others are in it to cash in on the latest multi-billion dollar market. While both situations can exist, it seems to be quite rare. Unfortunately for Guitar Hero and Call of Duty fans, Kotick has brought Activision over to the "money first, games second" approach. Instead of giving consumers the best product they can make, over the last few years, Activision has been pulling tricks like buying out the competition to make their product seem superior and releasing haphazard sequels one after the other, just to name a few. In the end, these various tactics have helped Activision to become the largest gaming publisher in the world. While some may not agree with Kotick's actions, one cannot disregard the fact that he is a damn fine businessman to have introduced these strategies while still managing to keep a majority of the company's followers.

He is deemed controversial because as the Wikipedia says he will not produce a game that they can't milk over a long period of time or cannot be turned in to a series (To .. make .. more .. money). Other developers however will make 'risky' games where the future of the franchise is uncertain.

The guy might be a money making machine but he's tearing Activisions gamer relationship to shreds.

Gotta be a balance involved in those two things, you'll end up how EA was if there isn't. People always moan about others making money, whether it's out of jealousy or just something to bitch about, but when games quality genuinely gets affected by money making decisions that's just taking it too far. PC version of MW2 just sounds like a direct console port, they're not even giving PC gamers what they've had since like 1994.

The bubble will burst if he carries on with the cutthroat attitude he has, it's the developers under Activisons reigns who should be worrying most, they'll start getting flak directed at them even if it's not their call.

I adore that man and the company, they manage to create products that are so excellent I don't even care about prices, money squeezing and what else they do - Bit like Apple

Activision don't create the products, they publish them. Apple do create their own products, not really the same scenario.

See my comment above, the developers end up getting a new ******* torn in them even if it's a decision made by Activision to modify the game/delay it/drop feature support/etc. I truly cant really see why IW would be all giddy about crippling the PC version.

Infinity Ward are who you should love, not necessarily Activision. IW could of been tied to any publisher and made COD MW, it's their ingrained talent that brings you MW, not Koticks business acumen.

I love both.

Amazon.co.uk review

Reasons to avoid:

1 -

Up to now, clans (not infinity ward) rented tens of thousands of dedicated servers that were located on professional datacenters with huge bandwidth and low pings. And cheap.

2 - From MW:2 onwards

Dedicated servers are banned in this game. It means you will play online in some random kid computer while he downloads porn on the background 10 minutes before he goes to bed, by which time you'll get "server disconnected" message. He owns you.

3-

No more choosing the lowest ping server.

4-

No more choosing the best server in relation to number of users/ping

5-

No more customizable server options to better suit different styles of play (are you Solid snake or rambo?)

6-

Clans biggest nightmare.

7-

No custom maps

8-

You are also forced to pay for downloadable content every time it comes out if you want to play online. This, because IW system will conveniently point you to a game that HAS downloadable content, but because you CANT choose the servers you are stuck with it.

9-

The first game sold 14 million copies. For a company, to sell up to 1 or 2 million copies keeps them honest, its like smocking a cigar. Addictive but sane. But at 14 million, you are into heavy drugs. You will steal your son to fund the vicious cycle.
