Cryptic confirms STO (Star Trek Online) out first quarter of 2010

Star Trek Online, the upcoming MMORPG based on the popular science fiction universe, will be released during the first quarter of 2010, developer Cryptic has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

That means it'll be out sometime between January and March next year.

Cryptic also teased the launch of a closed beta, saying it's "just around the corner".

The news comes from executive producer Craig Zinkievich, who was speaking to VideoGamer.com over the phone from Cryptic Studios' offices in California.

He said: "The closed beta is really just right around the corner. I think that there's a press release that's going to go out in just a couple of days."

And on the release date proper, Zinkievich confirmed: "Without giving you the date, which I'm not allowed to give out or else the marketing people will come and smack me in the back of the head, I can tell you that the game will be out the first quarter of 2010."

i dont have very high hopes for this as ST games tend to fail, and they havent released much about this game either

and Q1 2010, after weve heart next to nothing about it, seems fishy

I do hope it does well though, cause ST rocks

I thought Star Trek Armada did quite well.

I thought Star Trek Armada did quite well.

the first one did, second one no

My favorite ST game overall was Elite Force 1, in multi it was a better feeling quake 3(it was a q3 engine game)

It also had a fun campaign

There have also been many huge failures that tainted the franchise, Dominion Wars was probably the worst

Yeah, I hope for the best. I just finished Legacy on the Xbox, and now I miss Enterprise that much more. I really loved that show and the cast. I hope to see a new ST TV show soon!! I don't know if I would like a new original ST being re-done at first, but I would over time. Plus, they could start before that period of time. I would think that the pre-Picard period is wide open also.

I was following this game until I found out there was no pitch/yaw or facing in a different direction than you were going. That was a deal breaker for me since it is supposed to be a space sim... Granted, I haven't checked on it in a couple months, but meh.

Batman games tended to fail too but I doubt many would count the newest one as a fail or even close to it. I will most likely not buy first day but I will look to join quickly as to not fall beihnd as even with what happened to CO I ahve faith in cryptic.

I don't think it was ever suppose to be a space sim. This is a MMORPG with space and ground elements.

I would prefer it come out in the summer rather than spring. This game seems to need to be as expansive and interesting as possible and personally from what I have seen they are concentrating too heavily on the literal show structure rather than the universe itself. Need to play it first though. It might or might not replace EVE.
