Streaming 720p movies to 360

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So here's my problem, i am trying to setup Windows Media Center on Windows 7 to stream some HD (720p mkv) movies that i have to my Xbox 360 and am having some issues. Every time i try and play the movie it starts to load the video but then i get a "Video Error" message from WMC on my 360. It says "Files needed to display video are not installed or working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer." Now i have done both of these but to no avail. What i find strange is that i am able to watch TV Shows which are also 720p mkv with no problems at all. So i am just wondering if i am missing something or what needs to be done to get this working.

Any help is appreciated :)

xbox will not play .mkv file. you need to convert that file into .wmv for it to work on the 360. there are other formats 360 will read. but i always convert them to .wmv :)

This is not true, my 360 will stream 720p TV Shows just fine with the proper codecs from DivX Labs

It's just the movies that it will not play, which is what is confusing me. I mean wouldn't it technically be the same, just larger file obviously, or are movies done with a completely different mkv codec?

no he's right. xbox, WMC, or the built-in media player for the 360 don't play .mkv files natively. the 360 reads .divx but WMC still doesn't read it.

edit...wait did something change from Vista to 7 that .mkv works now?

Yes if you have 7 all you need to be able to stream .mkv to your 360 is the proper files from DivX Labs and you can stream, which is what iv stated a few times already. Trust me it works.

The Xbox 360 will play pretty much any media if the Media Center/WMP can transcode the file.

fixed the problem, turns out you need to have the latest ac3filter installed because of the DTS audio that the movies put out.
