A "Banned Member Forum"....

Recommended Posts

You know, I have been staff on other boards and I am now a regular user. I can see both sides. I know from my experience that staff has a much different view on things than regular members do. I've seen many times when the staff has had to deal with a member that they considered a troublemaker that was popular with regular members who didn't see anything wrong with the way member posted. My nearest example would be the difference between the police and your average person. It's a different way of seeing things and usually both sides have trouble seeing the other's viewpoint.

I guess my point with my earlier post was if this is a community then maybe it's time to get the community more involved in things. Sort of like an open source model. Anyway, this is not a subject that interests me much so with that I bow out of this thread.

I'm sure in this example, a name like "snyper" would come to the Neowin mod's minds.

thats why i say its good to get regular members to not just be involved in reporting bad posts, but in moderation as well, and where moderators would act more like mediators since they can see all the logs and stuff...

it wouldnt involve anything that members members involved cannot see , or havent already seen... for instance, everyone who participated in a thread which got deleted, or read and replied to deleted posts, etc....they've seen what happened, so they are in a position to judge the offender

I don't think that would be advisable: I am afraid that it would finish in public web lynchings where a group of users would vote against a particular member for any bad and most likely childish reasons: i.e.: I vote to ban <Member> because he is a <Company> fanboy, because he is <Politically Aligned>, because he is <color>-haired.

There are plenty of members I don't share values with on Neowin, it's not because I don't agree with them that I want them out.

as i have said in my previous posts, only people involved in a thread where the offense has taken place would be consulted about the banning of a member.... the current way of doing things where a moderator is alerted to the bad post, and the deleting/closing of the thread shouldnt be changed, but instead of talking amongst themselves about the incident, the moderators should ask everyone who was involved in the thread to vote if the offender should be banned.... the mods should still be the only ones to actually ban people and see the logs and stuff like that, but they should be less deciders and more mediators...

i really think this is gonna work, because if its an instaban for things like spambots, nobody would be replying to the thread, everyone would be reporting it... its when people have reason to have spoken up in a thread, and interacted with the offender throughout the offense, that things get complicated, it would be these same people who are in a position to judge the offender, like a kind of 'council' in a way...as in like how Growled pointed out, the mods might think that the offender's a bad person, everyone else thinks he's okay...

like narrow this 'council' down to people who have posted after the offender, or just people who have posted direct replies to him...

what if there were multiple offenders? what if the people involved all broke the rules? would they all comdemn each other? would they own up to thier wrong dongs? (i can just see it as being an argument between themselves, each trying to explain themselves and not really getting anywhere).

using members to moderate and make decisions would take much longer, some users only visit every couple of days, members have other commitments.

members also become friends with each other, often because they have the same interests, post in the same sections and threads. this friendship would cloud the judgement of such moderation decisions, they would put thier frienship first.

also, like someone else pointed out, they could 'vote' negatively against the member just because of his political standing or religion.

way too much potential for abuse, tbh.

Haha I know that's just a typo but it had me laughing out loud!

Thanks Shockz for letting me know,

The point I made with my deleted post was that banned members should be given a chance to redeem themselves. All too often once found to be "a trouble maker" they aren't given a fair shake. Just like how there is the auto warning reduction in place this idea of a banned members forum has it's merit.

I've been wondering for a while if I'm the only member who HASN'T been warned, ever. :p

I've never been warned on Christmas day.

Most members have never been warned. There are some members with one or two warnings and only a few that have more than that. That last group tends to stand out in the minds of the moderators but there really aren't too many people with high warning levels.
