+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 22, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 22, 2009 Here we ****ing go again.Left 4 Dead 2 has been refused classification by the OFLC once again, despite recieving a MA 15+ rating for a watered down version two weeks ago. This is what it says in the media send-out, sent by the OFLC.A three-member panel of the Classification Review Board (the Review Board) has unanimously determined that the computer game Left 4 Dead 2 is classified RC (Refused Classification). In the Review Board?s opinion, Left 4 Dead 2 could not be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification. The computer game contains a level of violence which is high in impact, prolonged, repeated frequently and realistic within the context of the game. In addition, it was the Review Board?s opinion that there was insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional ?infected? characters. This was a major consideration of the Review Board in determining the impact of this game on minors. It was refused the first time in mid-September Source: http://www.vg247.com/2009/10/22/left-4-dea...ralia-part-two/

The_Decryptor Veteran Posted October 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 22, 2009 Unfortunately, I'm not surprised. The people in charge of the system are out of touch with the people who have to deal with the system, and there's no sign of it changing since the people in charge are the ones who decide when it changes (It's one big loop of stupid)

Denis W. Veteran Posted October 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 22, 2009 That really sucks. :/ Just out of curiosity, will Steam refuse you from accepting a L4D2 gift if the recipient is from Australia? Or say you import a boxed copy from overseas; will Steam refuse activating your copy?
carmatic
how about a low-gore, model-swapped 'Australian version' released over there? after all , the "prolonged, high impact, repeated frequently and high impact" action is what makes it fun, the least they can do is address the other concerns of the review board... As far as I'm aware they were in talks to release a "low gore" version. I guess this was set aside though. What the hell is wrong with the Australian ratings board? How positively ass-backwards can you be in this day and age? Make the game an 18, accept any counter offer from Valve and you'll be fine.
defunk7
Haha, damn, thats a joke. Action movies with real actors, blood and guts gets by but a video game with an unreal amount of zombies gets banned. OT: Why is Aus turning into such a police state? The_Decryptor Veteran Posted October 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 22, 2009 It isn't a police state issue, it's just a matter of the ratings board having the mindset that only children play games (hence why they keep referring to the "damage" it would inflict upon minors, regardless of the rating it would be given)

Vice
That is really bad. Australia needs an Adult rating for games.
Tha Bloo Monkee
Australia as a country is one joke... Wow, I wouldn't go as far as calling a country a joke because they banned a game. Just a strict rating system that doesn't think like that others. I'm pretty sure I've heard of some other titles being banned in Australia that I was quite surprised about. I'm sure there are people that import these games. I'm curious as to whether or not Steam would block anyone from Australia from purchasing the game. Can anyone answer this? Neoauld
As long as it doesn't change the game for the rest of the world. im not sure about that I think that if they made an Aussie only version, wont that mean in multi that aussies can only play with other aussies, that might make multiplayer more bland(maybe almost dead if theres no one else on) On the other hand, screwing up the game worldwide(when its already kinda hated by alot of ppl), for one small grp of people is also bad should be interesting to see how that plays out

I would Yeah, if a game's banned people just import it, customs don't care because it isn't drugs or weapons If the game's banned, it's blocked via Steam
kl33per
Now us Australian's hope that the Xbox 360 version is multi-region so that it's easy to import. I'm kind of glad that it got refused classification (not banned!) so that the imported version will be properly endowed with gore. There's no way they were going to make an Australian-only version of the game, it would have been watered-down world wide. Now, it's not a problem, except that it will probably be expensive to import.

Manson_AAN
I believe if you buy it from overseas, you have to activate it overseas. You can't activate it from Australia. (this is also due to steam region locking activation for games) I bought L4D from overseas, but I couldn't activate it from Aus. I had to get a friend from overseas to activate it for me so I could play it down here in Aus.

Refused Classification does mean it's banned (if it's RC, you can't sell it, buy it, import it, etc., of course the police/customs don't care) And yes, they would make an Australian only version, there's a German only version of TF2, CS:S, etc.
Argi
Even if you import it I'm not sure Steam will let you play it if it detects you in Australia; at least I think that's the case with some other games. More than likely though there'll be some unofficial method to unlock the blocked content - be it a patch or simply a config file change. And for those who aren't familiar with the situation, the only thing preventing the introduction of an R rating for games is the South Australian Governor General (since an unanimous agreement from all GG's is required) – the ratings board (and pretty much everyone else) supports it but they're all they can do [regrettably] is enforce the ratings as they are.
