How long did your windows 7 installation take?

Took over an hour from a USB stick, though I suspect that for whatever reason the USB transfer was operating at low speed. ASUS P5N32E-SLI.

Older laptop took about 25 minutes from the same USB stick.

Both installs are from my USB Kingston DataTraveler 16GB DT100. Laptop install took about 12 minutes (loving my Scorpio Black Drive) and Desktop was 15. Overall not bad for my specs either but they can both do better if I had SSDs. I'm still waiting for those to be more matured and cheaper and I might consider one.

~ 20 minutes! I have to say, the installation of Windows 7 is the best, very easy and short.

Just under 25 minutes. I remember the (bad) old days when I was happy XP took just less than an hour. :p

About 40 minutes when including all driver installations.

Most painless Windows installation ever.

about 20 minutes to install and another 30 to collect all the drivers I needed. I took my time to get it right! ;)

From Vista Home Premium 32-bit on my Gateway C-140X to 7 Home Premium 64-bit custom install: 22 minutes.

However, I did use the Easy Transfer tool to transfer over 1.7GB of files and between the saving and restoring of that, it was more like 1.5 hours total.

I never messed with any of the betas, and so far, I am really impressed with 7. It's very clean, easy to use, and the install and, so far, using it, has just been perfect.

25 mins here - iirc 7 doesn't really install itself initially rather it's plain copied/images across then setup/installed after that, hence the wipe-your-drive aspect to it. This explains the speed - and it's less gunked than Vista.

So when Ive paid Dell ?15 delivery for my 'free' windows 7 upgrade should I do a clean install, seems to be much quicker, wont I lose all my files?

Yes, that's what is meant by a clean install.

Will I need to create a partition on my HDD, move all my music, documents, pictures, videos onto it and then install to the main segment of the HDD?

you don't need all that

just install it on the running os it would move it to Windows.Old folder

without removing anything or even formating

i do that all the time

I just finished my third install of Win 7 Premium ... I average about 30- 45 minutes on the install

of the new OS .. The part that took time was they where upgrades from Win XP ... I had to

transfer the data to a usb drive and then add it after the install ... that took some time ...

An reinstalling apps ...

When that was all done ... the systems ran better with Win 7 ... Also installed Microsoft's

new MSE ... anti-virus app ...

IMO ... Much better then MS Vista ... :)

Unless you format your hard drive, you won't use your files. Everything will be copied to a folder named Windows.old. But you won't be able to access your old programs. You will need to install all your old programs again. And you will need to copy all your personal files from Windows.old folder back to their original locations.
