+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted October 27, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted October 27, 2009 EA announced today that the "first DLC" (that means there'll be more, right?) for recently released Br?tal Legend will be arriving November 3 and November 5 on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, respectively. Named "Tears of the Hextadon," the two, totally not RTS maps ("Circle of Tears" and "Death's Fjord") will set you back 400 ($5) on Xbox 360. If you're a PS3 owner, however, the map pack will be free of charge for the first two weeks. "We love the PS3," EA's Brent Dady said over on PlayStation Blog, speaking on the publisher's decision to offer the DLC for free on PSN until November 19. Those who get the DLC on either console will also get a free in-game axe -- the intimidating "Blade of Ormag?den." We suggest you start looking for the game's creative lead Tim Schafer, who claims in the release that he plays online "every night." Get him Joystiq Biomass! Get him. Neo003
Sony must've paid some good mulah to get the the DLC free for two weeks. If they really loved PS3 so much they would've left it free forever.

I hate this approach to game making. Yes it shows that a developer is willing to support a game after its release but when DLC is released that close to when the game comes out, a certain question begs to be asked, "Why didn't it just come with the game in the first place?" If they really loved PS3 so much they would've left it free forever. Don't worry much, MS don't like doing free DLC anyway, Epic were annoyed at them blocking free DLC for Gears of War, and then they never released the free Titan Pack update for UT3. Then Valve aren't allowed to do the TF2 updates for free either. And it blows. I hate this approach to game making. Yes it shows that a developer is willing to support a game after its release but when DLC is released that close to when the game comes out, a certain question begs to be asked, "Why didn't it just come with the game in the first place?" I used to think like this then realised I should stop being a wet blanket and STFU. At least when it's related to games that are clearly content packed and good value for money, not something like the Tomb Raider scenario where they basically just cut a chunk out of the story and sold it to you. The game is content finished MONTHS before release, the developers who worked on the game need something to do in that time besides sit and twiddle their thumbs while the Q&A guys spend the last few months bug fixing/polishing. That is the same thing I always hear, which I don't disagree with but I don't have much of an answer for. In this case where it is just multiplayer maps, it couldn't take that long to bug test compared to the singleplayer. It just sucks to not be playing the same thing as others especially in a multiplayer community even when it is just a 2-3 map split in the community. Yes that sucks on consoles, and it also sucks hard with matchmaking. Map packs on consoles are almost completely useless when they always get charged for, PC owners are probably going to feel that curse for the first time if IW/Activision screw them over with MW2 map packs. Not enough people buy them and if your friends don't, sucks. At least with KZ2 on the PS3 we just setup a share account and split the map DLC between us, never bought a map pack myself on the consoles, and I never will. As for them being free on the PS3 for 2 weeks, well, the games sales are front loaded, this free PS3 DLC is coming weeks after release it's of absolutely no marketing benefit for Sony to be paying for our DLC here as some may suggest. EA are just a bit in Sony's pants, they also put a ton of their resources into PS Home before any other devs gave it a go.

I will apologize for some of the original confusion, in regards to this DLC's release. For some reason it felt like Brutal Legend was just recently released. I just looked up the release date and it has been out for two weeks! While this is still pretty quick, it isn't as bad as some of the DLC we have seen that comes out the same week as a game's release. As to why Sony gets it free, who knows. I was reading on Kotaku and somebody joked that maybe it was because the PS3 owners actually bought the game unlike a decent amount of 360 owners. :shiftyninja:
Neo003
I don't see why it can't be free unless there's something going one between EA & MS, just look at batman AA. There insane night map is still free.
