DDStriker
wouldn't mind the ads if they are in the game but actually downloading the ad on startup is kind of bull**** its a commercial product there shouldn't be any live ads in it
Hot
The correct term for this (which I am surprised no one has used in two pages of discussion) is product placement. It has been around forever and to answer the original question, according to Wikipedia the first occurrence of it in a video game was in 1984. Skyfrog
Funny thing is I remember when modders would intentionally replace the fictional ads in games with real products. Mafia for example, you could change all the generic cola trucks and billboards to Coca-Cola, make the gas stations into Texaco or whatever. It made the game feel more realistic. So if they want to put real billboards and things in games I don't really care much. As long as they are part of the game and not popping up in my face or something. iamwhoiam
The first i remember seeing this was NFS Unerground. Dont really mind. I don't really mind adverts in the games either except when my bandwidth is used to pull the ads and because that's happening, the games should cost less to purchase. S00N3R FR3AK
Battlefield 2142 was one of the first games to include dynamic in-game ads iirc... games have always had sponsors though. Yeah they were talking about the future weapons show and intel chips.
DigitalE
I don't really mind ads being there as long as they're not out of place. Billboard ads like that are fine, but I don't want to be seeing stuff like that in Halo :p
Vice
First time I noticed ads in game were the Lynx Body Spray advertisements in Rainbow Six Vegas. But I didn't mind the girls on the billboards were hot. Thats how I rate ads really. The hotter the girl the higher the rating. Bonus points awarded for partial nudity (I'm looking at you Garnier Shower Woman)

I don't really count ads that are hardcoded into the game since that's been in sports games for some time now. I know that Valve put dynamic ads into one of the Counterstrike games on PC before that and got a massive community backlash (although, what does Valve do that Valve's fans DON'T complain about? They could release Half Life 2 Episode 3 tomorrow and someone would bitch about it).
whYeNQue
last year obama in burnout paradise anyone? i remember reading about dynamic in game advertising back in 2004... it seemed like a slow take-off, but now with always on broadband internet connected to consoles... i think we'll be seeing a lot more. we wont get cheaper games, it's just another revenue stream for devs, with such high development costs they sell digital space to advertising marketers like massiveincorporated (owned by ms) who then get companies to advertise. soniqstylz
The only people pocketing any money.. will be the publishers. Anyone who has any ideas about games costing less due to digital transfer or advertising should wake up to reality - they won't cost any less, if anything they will cost more in the future. True, but if it's a way to fund a title that takes chances and you get a better game out of it, I'm all for it (in context). Like, Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition not only had product placement for the cars and parts, but they had billboard ads for Comedy Central and Maxim Magazine. It was done in a way that it wasn't in your face (hi, EA Sports), and made sense, it wasn't out of place. BTW, can anyone tell where I can buy Sprunk or Diet Sprunk, or is that just a UK thing, cuz I keep seeing ads for it. :shiftyninja:
