HPMCommander
in the preferences it says something about 'passive mode'... what does this do and how do i configure it? note: i'm running the ftp server (or trying to...) on port
ToastGodSupreme
got the ports in the router forwarded to the server? Also, you may want to create an anonymous account with NO priveleges (still have to set a directory for it). Just in case someone tries an anon connect they'll be prompted for a new user name and password what's that HPNCommander? An account you have setup? ToastGodSupreme
enable the check boxes on the login at least (leave it off for the password if you don't want to bother with it while testing) umm, not sure what to tell you from here... I'll probably IM you here on AIM
liar2
I think you might have to configure the passive mode. In the area it asks for your IP, type in your external IP. After doing that, you will have to set your ports for passive. Myself, I have ports 50000-50100 opened for passive in my router settings. You type that in the bottom where it asks for starting and ending port. After doing that, it should work fine. Any other questions, PM me.

Well, for the FTP, he's trying to test by connecting locally (a basic test would be to open IE, ftp://192.168.*.*). Don't need passive or anything special for that. But for some reason, he can't even connect to himself like that, we're working through settings. ;) (I'm running BFTP Server on this comp and have been using and testing BFTP like that for quite a while now). It also seems his ISP is blocking outside connections of sorts. Try to run a trace and it dies at his ISP. Try to go to visual route and it dies at his ISP. Try to ping and they time out. So yeah... still working on it. :)

+BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted June 7, 2003 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 7, 2003 This sounds suspiciously like a firewall issue. First off, do you have a software firewall running, i.e. Kerio, Zone Alarm *spit* (sorry I despise Zone Alarm, personal preference) etc? If so have you allowed the ftp client and the ftp server access on the required port? I would seriously suggest changing the port from 21 as a lot of ISPs now block that port in order to stop personal FTPs being set up. The other thing regarding firewalls is the router, I am assuming you are using a router due to the local IP address. Have you made sure that you have port forwarding set, if needed, and once again made sure that the relevant ports are aopen in the firewall (in your example port 21) Finally, from your screenshots it looks like you are running XP, have you done as m0fo suggested and disabled the internal XP firewall? A few suggestions for BPFTP, not sure on v2.21 as I use v2.15, but I am assuming the options are the same, as the interface looks the same. Highlight your account that you have setup and tick the 'login' box under Setup, and under Miscellaneous, make sure that 'Enable account' is ticked. Also make sure that the Server is active ('tick the Activate FTP server on startup' option under the General tab) as sometimes that isnt ticked and you manually have to activate it. Hope all that helps, let us know if anything is useful or if you need any other help.
Wolvereen
Try connecting via localhost (127.0.0.1) and see if it lets you in. I don't know about you, but I can not hit my FTP from within my own network by any other mean (I gave up a long time ago). Everyone else can hit my real world IP, but I have use 127.0.0.1.... ToastGodSupreme
Not a firewall or router issue. The connection (from us to him), is dying at his ISP, not his computer. It still has like, 3 or 4 hops to go till it gets to his computer and it dies out. Tried tracert and visual route. No go.
MxxCon
i don't know wtf ToastGodSupreme is talking about. but from the 1st 2 posted screenshots it has absolutly nothing to do with passive port settings or user account settings. from what he posted, his ftp session doesn't get to login, and much less to data connection (PORT/PASV commands). the only thing that i know of that could mess with ftp connection like that is a firewall..or broken ftp client. instead of WS_FTP, just use telnet till you get to login prompt

Bizarre, not heard of that before, hence me suggesting firewall issues (the symptoms sound VERY like that would be the cause). Another suggestion, have you tried connecting to the FTP using the Internet IP, rather than the local IP? If the same problem occurs, have you tried pinging the Internet IP to see if you get a response?
HPMCommander
yep, there's no response... :p
+BeLGaRaTh Subscriber¹ Posted June 7, 2003 Subscriber¹ Share Posted June 7, 2003 yep, there's no response... :p In that case it is definitely a local issue, i.e. a firewall etc, as otherwise you would get a ping response. Ensure that you have tried the steps I mentioned above, especially if you have a router, as the ports definitely need to be open. Also try and give MxxCons suggestion a try (Telnet to it). Other than that I am at a loss. Usually when someone calls in and we cannot ping them it is definitely a firewall issue, we ask them to temporarily remove the firewall and lo an behold, everything works fine, you just need to learn how to configure it. Once again hope that helps
