Alladaskill17
Just like the title says, I've had no need until now for an external HDD for my MacBook Pro. So I was just wondering if Applications can have a secondary app folder on the external, or even move all apps to the external. OR Apps can be launched anywhere "/Applications" is just a easy way to keep up.
Miuku.
You can have apps anywhere - /Apps, your home dir, any dir of your choice, network drive. Any location that's accessible. Applications folder is merely a location that's easy to keep track of.
Brian M. Veteran Posted October 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 28, 2009 They can go anywhere, unless they come with an installer which specifies otherwise (for example, Mac/iPhone SDKs must be installed to /developer iirc). If you haven't already, drag /Applications to the dock - makes for a fairly easy app launcher :p
giga Veteran Posted October 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted October 28, 2009 Don't move Apple applications out of /Applications though. Software Update won't catch updates for them if they're not there. I keep all of my third party applications in a separate folder in ~ for the sake of organization. Caledai
If they are Apple applications leave them where they are otherwise the updates to said apps will not work. If they require an installer (usually the bigger, more complex apps), change the path within the installer if you can (Such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office) If they are from a DMG and require you to drag them to applications - put them where you like. I have most of my Third Party apps in /Applications/ThirdParty (Makes the App Stack nicer, with a ThirdParty stack too) If they are apps only you use - put them in ~/Applications - it changes the icon itself and there is a third stack. I do this on a network drive as I manage a couple of networks, makes it easier to access App's that are diagnostics, utilities that you don't want on the image. It might install stuff to the main drive but the /Developer folder won't be on your main drive
Xtreme $niper
Just remember that the application preferences and settings will still be stored on your internal drive under Application Support.
