[Steam] wtf happened?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

First time Steam user here. I downloaded TourchLight - Demo and I was very excited to play it. After downloading, I installed the game and all of the sudden I was faced with an error about some VC++ runtime error. I search the interwbez and after reading, I decided to uninstall the game and them reinstall it.

I went to the control panel and I uninstalled it, and BOOM. The downloaded files are all gone? Where did the files that I downloaded go? uninstall means deleting the files as well in Steam or something?

I can't be bothered downloading 800 MB again, it took me a day to download it. Is there a way to get back what was lost?

Thanks.

Steam downloads the files directly to their install location within the Steam folder, uninstalling deletes those files.

So yes, you're going to have to re-download them.

Yep there is no "install" on Steam. With Steam you just download the games and they are ready to play the second it finishes downloading. Just start the game and play :). When you uninstalled the game, Steam did as you asked.. uninstalling means taking it off your PC but if you bought games through steam, they will still be available for you to download again.

If you really don't want to download them again it should be technically possible to use file recovery software to restore the deleted files as llong as they haven't been overwritten. Even if some of them have been overwritten steam would probably do a hash check and redownload only those files.
