Just thought I'd ask this as I've noticed I always turn subtitles on in games. Obviously English is my native language, but I still use them.

I've noticed I never do it with movies, I guess it's because a movie is passive and you can follow it without any distractions, while in a game I'm thinking about my actions on the keyboard/controller and other things.

I can read the subtitles much faster than the character will speak them, which is great when the game lets me skip the characters speech via some method.

That and half the time I end up playing without headphones.

yup, always, while English was my first language (I was born in UK) Spanish is not an option, almost all games are translated in Spain and for people outside there the accent is hideous and voice acting beyond terrible, so I always play in subtitled English (Y)

Yes, I always turn them on. Mostly because the sound effects and music are much louder than the speech. Sometimes it's hard to hear the characters talking over the rest of the game or whatever ambient noise (read: girlfriend) I have in the background.

I always switch on subtitles in games, you can get more information out of them that way (in my experience).

It's all particulaarly useful on the new Telltale Games, games. xD

I do when available and if it helps.

Half life 2 was one of the first that I remember doing it on. A lot of the dialog is not in a cut scene, which means there's noise masking some of the instructions.

I didn't do it on GTA4 because the dialog is mostly in cut scenes. And I didn't feel the need.

so... sometimes I guess.

I just feel like sometimes characters in games are hard to understand and my hearing is shot from playing in bands from 12-25, so yeah I definitely almost always enable them as well.

Yes I use subtitle for everything I can. English is not my first language and it helps me a lot to understand them better.

It depends on the game some I turn them on others I don't. An example wont be GTA4 I like having them on because you can read what they are saying in Serbian in their conversations.

Depends, if the game is story line intensive I'll turn them on (for ex- Half Life 2) , if it isn't I won't (Team Fortress 2). But I voted yes :p.

I always turn them on when playing games, I can read it much quicker than they can speak so if I know its going to be a load of rubbish I can skip it that much quicker. :p

I used to turn on subtitles in every game whenever possible. Now, I find subtitles very distracting, as subtitles ALWAYS draw your attention away from the what is happening on your screen. it's incredibly hard to ignore subtitles :)

IMO, that's why games are a lot more immersive without subtitles.

It's the same with tv-shows really.

I keep subtitles on, but don't always read them; sometimes when the VOs are good I like just listening to the characters speak (it feels more cinematic). But subtitles are handy when either I'm in a hurry or have trouble hearing/understanding the VOs.
