That Guy Veteran Posted November 2, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 2, 2009 Yeah, whilst I'm studying German at A-Level, I have switched all my games to German, so naturally I have them on.
mr.biomech
Usually yes, but it depends on the game
Razorwing
I sometimes turn them on when I replay the game. On the first pass I usually don't.
furyshinobi
Yes if the game has a subtitle option :) It helps me improve my English (I have English speaking problems as a kid though not as bad now) and I like reading as they talk.
Salty Wagyu
Yes, subtitles are a necessity, because I am deaf. This is why I never could play a game such as Half Life 1. I managed ok in Doom 3, it just sucked not being able to open the cabinets.
WastedJoker
Always because a lot of games speech audio is unclear/distorted by background noise. Especially if missions targets etc are given by speech only.
chicken-royal
I usually do for singleplayer games, to make sure I don't miss any part of the story. For multiplayer games (or the MP part of a game) I don't.
scokem
I always use them too. It's useful when you get options like in L4D where you can set it to "Full" and it tells you what noises are being made in case you can't hear them (like when I've got my volume down and can't be arsed to get my headphones out of a night-time) so you have some advance warning of enemies. Dead_Monkey
I do, for most of the reasons listed above (I'm not deaf). I've always been a big reader of books/comics too, so maybe I'm just attuned to it. Are any of the people voting no also non-readers (except when necessary?) I definitely think that games should incorporate descriptive subtitles and visual cues for the deaf (directional coloring or arrows when you're being shot, etc). Contrariwise, I'd like to see see what game developers might be able to come up with for gamers who are visually impaired. I wouldn't be able to play most games without glasses, and it would be interesting to see games for those who are fully blind (IIRC there was a Daffy Duck game on DS that had segments where you closed the DS and played only with the shoulder buttons while receiving voice instructions). Ji@nBing
Almost always if they are available. I just find it easier to follow what's going on. Funny thing is, I can't stand subs in movies. Go figure
scumdogmillionaire
I have an 11 month old daughter, so assuming I find time to play the xbox, yes, I need subtitles. Wolverine is frustrating, as it doesn't have any and i'm trying to finish that.
bryonhowley
I live in an apartment complex so a1000watt 5.1 and thin wall equals low volume especially at nights so subtitles are a must.
Denis W. Veteran Posted November 3, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 3, 2009 Yes, if available. Source-based games are best at this. Yeah, whilst I'm studying German at A-Level, I have switched all my games to German, so naturally I have them on. Was wondering why your L4D2 review screenshots were all in German. :p

DrunknMunky Veteran Posted November 3, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 3, 2009 Nope. Not unless the voice actors are using really strong accents etc. GTA4 is the most recent games I've had to use subtitles because I just didn't have a clue what some of the Jamaican characters were saying. nokiaxion
Just thought I'd ask this as I've noticed I always turn subtitles on in games. Obviously English is my native language, but I still use them.I've noticed I never do it with movies, I guess it's because a movie is passive and you can follow it without any distractions, while in a game I'm thinking about my actions on the keyboard/controller and other things. Big +1. I never put subtitles in movies but in games, I do. As a matter of fact, I put all subtitles on so HL2 was: *crowbar* *wood breaking* *crowbar* *wood breaking* *crowbar* *wood breaks* :p Yes, subtitles are a necessity, because I am deaf. This is why I never could play a game such as Half Life 1. I managed ok in Doom 3, it just sucked not being able to open the cabinets. I believe HL1 was ported to the Source engine so maybe now the subtitles are like in HL2 :) Almost always if they are available. I just find it easier to follow what's going on. Funny thing is, I can't stand subs in movies. Go figure  +1 I hate subtitles in movies but love them in games.
Remysaus
almost always, there's just always something distracting me at home or i have to keep the volume down because of my sister studying .
way2quik
most of the time because the players speak weirdly or the background music covers up their voices.
dead.cell
Yeah, I play with them on mostly because many games have at least one character who is either hard to hear, doesn't speak clearly, or have some other sounds overtaking the speaker's voice. I was just wondering if the bass levels (vibration) are of any use to a person that is deaf.
MytMowse
It drives people I know crazy that I like to have the subtitles in games. I just want to make sure I hear everything right, because some times the audio isn't balaced right so the music is so damn loud you can't hear the dialogue. ozgeek
Good to see other deaf/hearing impaired people here. I'm hearing impaired and I have trouble decrypting English unless it is spoken clearly and slowly. Yes, I always turn on captions/subtitles in games and I never play games that don't have captions unless I can find transcripts for them. I do the same with movies as well. No captions in games or movies = No money from me.
