Copying MiniDV tapes to PC

I need to transfer some MiniDV tapes to DVD soon, and I was wondering what the best program would be to use. Also since they are digital, do I still have to copy them in real time like older analog formats time or can I copy the data from the tapes at high speed? I'll be transferring from the camera over Firewire I think (I don't have them yet).

Thanks :)

the video camera will show as a "digital VCR"

as far as i know, you have to play it back just like analog formats. 5 tapes = 5 hours

Movie Maker will import. 13 GB per tape. though, i think it has trouble with 16:9 video.

or pretty much any other video editor or DVD authoring program

VLC might import too. lots of trial and error though before you get anything done.
