fhpuqrgrpgvirzhpujbj
I've been messing around with the Source engine lately, I may try this. Do I need to buy UT to use it?

LOC Veteran Posted November 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 6, 2009 Anyone can literally download UDK and make their own game and/or mod now using UE3. I think that rocks. I guess Epic still remembers us PC gamers :sniff:
carmatic
but arent they working on ue4 by now?
LOC Veteran Posted November 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 6, 2009 Of course they are, they've been working on UE4 for a couple years now.
Aero_Rising
It can only be used for non commercial so what's the point unless for some reason you want to spend your time making a game and get nothing in return not to mention you can forget about multiplayer because how are you gonna pay for the servers. John Freeman
...not to mention you can forget about multiplayer because how are you gonna pay for the servers. Why, you create player hosted solution. See Borderlands or MW2 for example.

If you decide to sell your game, if it makes less than $5,000 US you don't have to pay a thing to Epic, if you does make more you have to pay a measly $99 for a license. Fair trade off I think. There is a much more expensive license (certainly not the same price companies like Square etc are paying though I'm sure) for more professional indie devs.
Aero_Rising
Why, you create player hosted solution. See Borderlands or MW2 for example. Those still need servers for matchmaking unless you just want dedicated servers which I despise because having every server loaded with mods is annoying and makes it hard to just play the game the way it is by default if you want to. It's far better than using anything under the gpl though don't even get me started with these free open source engines that make it very difficult to get anything out of making a game. You can use it to learn how to develop. If you want a job in the game industry, and learn and master UE3 it's a big advantage, even springboarding into UE4. Also you'll have something worthwhile to show on a resume.
