Just bought a mac and need some software advice

Recommended Posts

I just bought a MacBook Pro and am trying to find some good software so that it can replace my Windows system.

If I list the Windows software would others be able to list similar software for the Mac? The software doesn't have to be free, I am fine with paying for software if it is good enough.

  • Free Download Manager
  • Media Player Classic Homecinema (for avi (divx/xvid) and mkv playback)
  • CCleaner (for general system clean up)
  • Eraser (for secure file deletion, I work with a lot of sensitive financial documents for clients and I want to ensure that they really are gone)
  • mkv2vob (for converting mkv files to mpeg files so I can play them on my PS3)
  • Mp3tag
  • Total Commander
  • uTorrent
  • Notepad2 (for this I think TextMate is what I am after but willing to try other free editors before I buy it)

I think that is about it. So far I am loving the MBP :) Installed Windows Vista in boot camp and Windows 7 in VMware Fusion. This really is an amazing machine. Runs beautifully.

Many thanks in advance for your replies

  • Free Download Manager - Not sure - I just use Safari as it has the ability to resume downloads
  • Media Player Classic Homecinema (for avi (divx/xvid) and mkv playback) - I personally use VLC for all video playback
  • CCleaner (for general system clean up) - Onyx
  • Eraser (for secure file deletion, I work with a lot of sensitive financial documents for clients and I want to ensure that they really are gone) - Can be done in disk utility (Erase free space)
  • mkv2vob (for converting mkv files to mpeg files so I can play them on my PS3) - Unsure
  • Mp3tag - Unsure
  • Total Commander - Not really a direct replacement, but Transmit
  • uTorrent - uTorrent
  • Notepad2 (for this I think TextMate is what I am after but willing to try other free editors before I buy it) - Yep, Textmate :p

  • Free Download Manager Use Safari's built-in download manager
  • Media Player Classic Homecinema (for avi (divx/xvid) and mkv playback) Perian with QuickTime
  • CCleaner (for general system clean up) Onyx
  • Eraser (for secure file deletion, I work with a lot of sensitive financial documents for clients and I want to ensure that they really are gone) Secure Empty Trash built into OS X
  • mkv2vob (for converting mkv files to mpeg files so I can play them on my PS3) ffmpegx, a bit flaky on Snow Leopard
  • Mp3tag TriTag? Doesn't have support for album art or use iTunes
  • Total Commander Path Finder 5
  • uTorrent Transmission
  • Notepad2 (for this I think TextMate is what I am after but willing to try other free editors before I buy it) TextMate
