Accessing my NAS through Win7 on VMware?

Recommended Posts

Here is the scenario. MBP with SL 10.6.2 and newest VMware using Win7. VMware assigns the network of Win7 an address of 172.XXX.XXX.XXX but my NAS and my home network is an address of 192.XXX. Since VMware shares the nat of the mbp and therefore gets an internet connection that way how do I get access to my NAS?

This is the only stumbling block from using vmware over boot camp. Any ideas?

Instead of using NAT type networking in the VM could you not just switch the VM to use bridged networking instead? It should then appear like another machine directly connected to your network and should either pick up a DHCP address (assuming DHCP is running there) or you can just assign it another 192.168.x.x address manually.... you should then be able to access your NAS as you would from any other machine directly connected to your network :)

Okay so I have it in bridged (auto-detect) mode and while it can connect to my network it doesn't get internet access. I can see my networked computers and NAS but cannot access any websites.

Any ideas?

I honestly have no clue what could be going on past that point. Doesn't make any sense. When you ping something from the VM (like cnn.com), does it get anywhere?

If I leave the network connection set to shared then it works fine for the internet but I cannot access my home network. But if I switch it over to bridge mode then I can access my network but no internet....cannot even ping any outside site.

What is even more weird though is when it is in bridge mode it has a correct IP/subnet/gateway/dns address from my network. There should be no reason why this doesn't work. I'll do some screenshots later tonight.

Okay the first screenshot is with vmware set to 'nat' and sharing the network connection of the mbp. The internet works fine but cannot access my network/nas. The second screenshot is in 'bridged' mode set to automode. I have no internet access but can connect to my network/nas. It make no sense.

Yeah bridge mode is what you want -- and your getting an IP from your dhcp server, it looks like.

Im guessing this is wired to your router? with the connections specific dns, I see 2wire.net -- they make wireless routers.. So is your mac wired or wireless?

You don't have any type of mac filtering going on do you? the mac address bridged interface is going to be different than the physical address - so if you have mac filtering setup on your router - this could block internet access.

When you do a shared/nat - the mac used to talk to your router would be that of your mac box running vmware.

Some more details of your physical network would be helpful - if wireless, wired. Do you have more than 1 physical inteface on the mac running vmware?

What is the model number of this device you got from your ISP? Do you have more than 1 machine using it - ie its not limiting you to only one device using the internet that you could be fooling when your natting?

Wired I have my media server, thinkpad t61, nas, and ps3. Wireless I have the mbp and now win7 through vmware.

I will get you some more info when I get home. You do bring up an interesting point though. Not sure why it says 2wire.net.

Something is definitely wrong

I think I may have finally gotten it. It looks like the built in firewall of the router was blocking outside access. Once I assigned appropriate access levels to it everything is fine.
