+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted November 18, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted November 18, 2009 We recently received a tip from a source very close to Sony who says that they have been in talks with Mozilla lately about possibly porting firefox over to the PS3. That said, our source made sure to point out that they were unsure if any deal had actually been reached at this point, but it is great news none the less considering the complaints Sony has been getting about the lack of reliability with their current built in PS3 web browser. Throwing firefox into the mix would give PS3 the ultimate advantage when it came to internet functionality. I know I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for this one, and PSInsider will be sure to bring you any updates to this rumor as they become available. Source: http://psinsider.e-mpire.com/index.php?cat..._articleid=1447 Didn't Sony grab deals with Google for Chrome on the Vaio laptops? I guess Games division is separate entity. Either way may be part of the whole "current facebook functionality is just the start". Or it may be BS.

.Ark
I can't wait for a better browser on the PS3...I actually think they would attract more buyers if they advertised it with Firefox rather than their own browser.

Well personally, my stance with Sony is everything they say is BS till they prove it otherwise :p All this talk is great and all but that is all Sony is, talk...how about they do some action? would be a nice change for them  I can't wait for a better browser on the PS3...I actually think they would attract more buyers if they advertised it with Firefox rather than their own browser. Why? the average Joe doesn't care. It will still be their own browser, chances are if they even do anything they'll replace whatever rendering engine is in there now and put the gecko one in there, outside I doubt it'll change much. I could be wrong, but that is my educated guess.
hackdoom
I really hope that the deal goes through. The current PS3 web browser is my enemy. :shiftyninja:

Obviously ps3 owners (techy or not) will talk to their friends and family about the PS3 and if the browser comes up.. I bet a lot of them won't have good things to say and that applies to the average Joe more because to them a website simply "doesn't work on the PS3" and that's frustrating. hackdoom
I seriously doubt anyone would buy or not buy aps3 based on the browser it comes with. Most people don't even buy it to surf the web. Actually, what browser the PS3 includes could be a strong incentive for 'techy' people, for the casual who ask their opinion, for the many people who use Firefox and want to buy a console, etc. I don't the Mozilla name being advertised on the PS3's box or anywhere else, though. Nevertheless, I strongly dislike the browser it sports at the moment. Edited November 19, 2009 by CrownedClown03
red.
I'd prefer Chrome or Opera instead.

Well, companies can do very different things in different divisions and sometimes it can be really confusing too. LOL For example, Microsoft used a 3rd party spreadsheet component for *I think* Microsoft Money, rather than use Excel services... I guess it just made more sense to go with this 3rd party for some reason... the thing that makes firefox awesome are the extensions and themes, and i wonder if those will even be available on the ps3. I would be curious to see, but I would imagine that Sony would have the add ons locked down pretty good. Either there would be none, or it would only support Sony approved / provided add ons... Sony isn't really known for being very open... Unfortunately... As for the choice of Firefox, isn't the PS3 software based on Linux? I may be wrong, but I thought it was. In that case Firefox I believe is the only browser that presently supports Linux. Because I'm 1) Pretty sure that Firefox has a Linux version, and 2) Still think Google is working on the version of Chrome for Linux... Of course the above paragraph may not be accurate at all and I don't have time to check at the moment. That's what my memory tells me though. lol

Indeed, when it comes to being 'open' this gen Sony have offered an easy solution to upgrading hard drives, the ability to install linux (removed with the slim) and an industry standard method of connectivity in relation to bluetooth controllers/keyboards and headsets. The_Decryptor Veteran Posted November 19, 2009 Veteran Share Posted November 19, 2009 I can't see this happening, unless Sony's also going for a general method of allowing end users to install and run their own apps on the PS3. Porting it to the PS3 would result in tools and code for running generic applications on the PS3 being freely available from Mozilla, which I doubt Sony would want. If it was going to happen, I'd expect to see it from Opera (like with the Wii) Edit: While there is the Linux for PS3, it's also limited in what it can do since Sony don't want to give out details about the hardware, and even then the hardware access is limited while running under Linux.
