Sony To Upgrade PS3 Consoles To 3D

In a presentation detailing Sony's plans to become profitable by the end of 2010, Sony revealed plans to upgrade Playstation 3 consoles with full 3D support. The news supports previous reports on Sony's 3D PlayStation 3 strategy, suggesting that a firmware upgrade would introduce the capability to existing consoles. Not only does Sony plan on upgrading the console to support 3D, but release games in 3D as well in order to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities.

Of course, 3D games and 3D televisions would go hand-in-hand, so adding the capability to the PlayStation 3 would definitely help drive at least a few television sales.

Would you purchase a new television to support 3D gaming, or is Sony seeing things?

3D = Gimmick - There, I said it.

Until it can be done without glasses and distortion with a wide viewing angle, you're absolutely right. It will be in the same place it has been for the past fifty years.

Sweet!!! I'm totally not gonna look like a douche swinging around a dildo wearing 80s sunglasses in my living room.

Do you host public viewings of your living room? If so sign me up.

Do you have friends or family who happen to pop by from time to time unannounced? If anyone caught me waggling a Wii Mote or some female pleasuring device with ugly glasses I'd be branded a queer for life. ( No jokes on that plx :p )

**** the PS3 Mote, I just want to play Wipeout HD in 3D high on crack cocaine.

So wait, we just got people to buy PS3s, now they need shutter glasses, motion controllers and for many a new TV that supports 120hz? All of the sudden Natal seems like a brilliant idea.

@bob: Why do people need shutter glasses, new TV's and everything? It's called an option. It's better to have the option than not.

And the motion controller doesn't need 3D anyway.

What has Natal got to do with 3D gaming?

The competition to Natal from Sony is the PS3 Mote, not movie/game(s) 3D capability... On the last page people were just digging into the PS3 Mote through a dislike for it, it's not directly tied to 3D gaming. GT5/Wipeout HD were running in 3D at CES and they're normal controller based games.

Either way it's something for the future, not every single person is buying an HDTV now. People buy them every day of every year, there comes a time when people will be buying 3D capable TVs. 3D movies are probably going to be a bigger draw than gaming, no matter whether or not you like 3D movies, this will undoubtedly be one of the first in-home solutions.

Philips made 3D tv's that didn't require glasses, then early this year when there was this supposed economic crack, they closed the departmnent to save money. ironically, 3D has become big news since then.

Because I consider Natal to be a gimmick and a bit of a gamble at this point. But this goes past gimmick/gamble stage, sails right past it into bad marketing bullet point turned into product.

Uhhh Bob this isn't a hardware addon but, it's a firmware update. Firmware updates don't cost money. It's not comparable to Natal, the PS3 mote is comparable to Natal.

Did you not grasp my point? There will come a time when every HDTV being sold is 120Hz or whatever 3D needs, and at that point people will still be buying HDTVs for the first time, or maybe some people upgrading.

Heck TVs on the market right now support 3D.

Yeah most of us are SOL because we all got our HDTVs over the past years, but there's many people still to change over.

And yeah, I understand you may or may not need glasses, not entirely clear yet, but see HawkMans point above.

I didn't miss anything, it will still require hardware at this point and anytime soon. If this is part of their 2010 initiatives then you'll either need shutter glasses and/or a new TV. So it is a hardware add-on, and a useless one at that .

Just because most of us are screwed due to us having "old" HDTVs, doesn't mean someone ready to buy an HDTV for the first time is necessarily spending their children's inheritance just to get 3D movies/gaming. They're spending the money at that point to get a new TV as they can afford it then.

Most HDTVs will probably come with 120Hz in the future, a large chunk of them do now. For example, I think pretty much every Bravia from the mid-range does now.

Sony are releasing a firmware update for the PS3 to support 3D, they aren't releasing Sony/Playstation branded hardware you need to pay for to get 3D. What you plug your PS3 into isn't their concern, nor is the year it's manufactured, they just provide the support for those fortunate enough to have the hardware.

Besides that Hasn't nintendo proven by now that gimmicks sell hardware.

even if sony and Ms stack gimmicks like 3D and Natal on their hardware, unlike the Wii, they're still hardcore gaming machines. theyc an still play AS2, MW2, Forza 3++

and yes, even if the people who buy the hardware for the gimmicks aren't hardcore gamers, and like Wii owners won't play it as much as PS3/360 owenrs. more people owning the hardware isn't a bad thing, even if it isn't "your people", but they keep the market alive and the online community alive and broaden the market for the device. Which by the way, isn't a bad thing. the PS3 and 360 aren't better devices because they only cater to the hardcore gamepad gamer, just like the Wii isn't a better device because it's targeted almost exclusively at casuals and retro gamers. as attachment rate and usage stats clearly indicate.

People being angry and whining because console creators add non hardcore features to their hard core consoles or vica versa is as stupid as people getting angry because their precious exclusives who's been exclusive since forever isn't anymore.

Firmware is not a hardware addon.

Hit yourself harder with that palm, if it won't work on every HD TV and will require 3D shutter glasses it is a hardware addon. And look at the diagram, it's part of their strategy that people will invest in Sony products to take advantage of the tech. They aren't adding this function out of the kindness of their hearts.
