i dont mind them laughing at me because im new to this type of thing. I just didnt want anybody stealing my internet connection so i came here for help. There's gotta somebody who would rather help than laugh at a person who is seeking help.

what kind of setup do you have? is it wired, wireless or both? if you have wireless, what kind is it? B, G. N, etc...? Wired is more safe but can be expensive to run all the cables and such. too much work involved unless you get power-line setup and then you get to go. wireless is safe and secure but you must set a strong password to prevent eavesdroppers from stealing and hogging your bandwidth. you can become incriminated from this stuff and you could possibly be in for a call from the local authorities. for example a person could log onto to your wireless and then start to download copyrighted and illegal stuff and use your ip to do the job. there are laws to help protect you but you again must create a strong password. your question of help is a good thing. to ask is a sign of intelligence, to not ask is a sign of stupidity and ignorance. we had a scrupulous neighbor who works for ibm and he tried to log into our wireless but i set the router up so that only specific ip address could use and log onto the router (for example if you have 3 pc's then obtain the ip addresses from them and then set up the router to only allow these toi access the router. simple solution and i know that this is not best thing but it helps..

its a wireless router but i have my PC & xbox 360 connected in a wired setup to my modem. i do not want anybody stealing my internet. that was why i made the thread, to find out how i can block people from stealing it. someone had mentioned that since i'm using a wired setup I could just turn off the wireless feature. i did that and i was fine. However i switched to a different router, still a D-Link, but when i logged into the configuration page for this router i didn't know which setting to change to disable the wireless. Maybe it was called something different.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the way people are treated around here lately. :(

But any way, what model is the new router you hooked up? It should be similar to the other one though. In the router config page, look for a tab/section that says something about Wireless. The option to turn it on/off should be there somewhere.

EDIT: Under the Wireless section. Where it says Wireless Radio: Enable/Disable. That's what you're looking for.

Loso,

http://192.168.0.1 is the address for your router. Only you (or any other computer connected to the routher via ethernet or wifi) can access it. It's an internal (to your network) address.

As others have said, log in to your router and changed the appropiate settings.

You have two options:

1) turn the wireless off completely

2) Leave it on and secure it with a WPA2 encryption. WEP is very weak and if somebody wanted it bad enough, it can be easily hacked.

If you're ever going to use the wireless, I recommend it to leave it on. No one is going to steal your internet if you use a password with WPA2 encryption.

ANOTHER THING:

I recommend that you change your router's password from the default to something else in case you haven't done it. If you do this, only YOU will have access to your routers configuration page no matter what.

Keep in mind that the router's password is different from your wireless password. The router's password is the one you use when you go to the http://192.168.0.1 address. The wireless password is the one that windows asks you for to connect to the wireless internet.

Good luck.

There must be a quick guide that is either in the package or CD/DVD. If not go to the website of the device and go to customer support and download the guides. It is not so hard but some companies have strange concepts and this can be so darn hard to figure out. For example my Asus Router with Skype. It is so strange but after a while I figured out the logic and I decided to shelf it. It does not work (Skype Phone Drivers) for AMD 64bit.

I have the same setup as you (wired only setups, no wireless) and it took me 10 seconds to disable the wireless. It has to be available via your router's config page. what router do you have? Have you ever tried to visited the maker's site for assistance?
