Welcome Screen in Windows 2003

Recommended Posts

Oh YES DKC ...

That Worx Allright

But got to find out how to open the Control Panel Entry to change the picture etc, coz obviously in Windows 2003 the only way to modify user settings is thru the "Local Users and Groups" which lacks that feature.

Any help ????

BTW: Running the StyleXP installer in XP compatability mode DID'NT Help

Hi,

I've got my Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Corporate just about as close as I can to look like Windows XP Pro without any hacking or cracking, just a few Registry key changes and a lot, I mean a lot of patience. :woot: :woot: :woot:

The only visible difference to me is the lack of the Logon screen and the shutdown, rather than having the individual button, I select from the drop-down.

Things my Win2k3 Server/Pro has:

1. Audio

2. XP Sounds

3. Fast switching

4. User Accounts in Control Panel

5. No Ctrl-Alt-Del to logon

6. No Lockout

7. Themes

8. etc.

Cheerz

 :D ;)

except for the user accounts, i never really looked into that

Hi,

Just double-click this .reg file to import into Registry.

As I always advise, look at this .REG file first by highlighting file, then right-click and select EDIT.

It's not identical to XP, but it's as close as I can get, haven't looked at for the last few weeks, even got the right ICON to display :D

Cheerz :) :D ;)

Before i try it .. tell me how it worx

Hi,

It just adds some values into the registry, the key should already be there.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]@="User Accounts"

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows XP style User Accounts dialog"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,-269"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell\Open\Command]

@="Control Userpasswords2"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\ShellFolder]

"Attributes"=dword:00000000

Here we go:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]@="User Accounts"

This is so User Accounts displays in Control Panel.

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows XP style User Accounts dialog"
This is the ballon pop-up window when you hover the mouse over User Accounts
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,-269"

This adds the icon to the name User Accounts, Icon #269 in x:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell\Open\Command]@="Control Userpasswords2"

When you press User Accounts, it executes Control Userpasswords2 command to provide the User Accounts pop-up window/GUI.

Try it, put Control Userpasswords2 into Start/Run and select OK.

And that's about it

Cheerz  :D ;)

Hi guys,

I just checked on a brand new install on Windows Server 2003 and this .reg file isn't enabling User Accounts, there must be something else I tweaked the PC with.

Sorry, I'll have to investigate further.

Cheerz  :D ;)

This is the original reg file that came out and it worked just fine to me. GO ahead and compare it with the one posted, one of the diferences is the icon in contol panel, it looks like the win2000 icon, not the XP icon. Maybe can be modified to get the 'nicer' icon.

------------------------------------------------------------------start file here.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows 2000 style User Accounts dialog"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\netplwiz.dll,0"

@="Add Userpasswords to Control Panel"

------------------------------------------------------------------end file here.

**** maybe changing just the following parts from:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]

@="User Accounts"

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows XP style User Accounts dialog"

**** to:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]

@="User Accounts"

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows 2003 Pro style User Accounts dialog" <---change title to whatever!!

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\shell32.dll,269" <---change dll file with the correct icon

number (not sure if it need the '-' sign or not (?))

Just an idea...

OK guys, I tested I as I said and it worked just fine...

this is it:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------file starts here

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]

@="User Accounts"

"InfoTip"="Starts The Windows Server 2003 User Accounts dialog"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\shell32.dll,-269"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}\Shell\Open\command]

@="Control Userpasswords2"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{98641F47-8C25-4936-BEE4-C2CE1298969D}]

@="Add Userpasswords to Control Panel"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------file ends here

And this is with the icon (from WinXP icon, I also changed the tipInfo).

You can just create the .reg file from this and double click on it, it will make the right change if you did it wrong before..

Good luck! :p

Yes ... This is all good to show the Control Userpasswords2 applet into the control panel ...

but please read one of my initial post in this thread ...

What is required is the applet that let you change the ICON that shows at the welcome screen and on the startmenu

Now the "Control Userpasswords2" can also be called thru the RUN but where to find the applet that let u change the welcome screen icon ...

As i said before i ported the nUsrMgr.cpl from XP to 2003 but Didnt Work.

Lets hope some one finds out !!!

I got it by Using X-Setup (fast user switiching, welcome screen, user pic at the top of the Start Menu)

In X-Setup, click All Plugins > Startup/Shutdown > Startup > Windows NT/2K/XP > Inside Login Window > Welcome Window / Login Window and make sure that the top option is checked (the one that says "Enable Welcome windows style")
