Just curious on the buying habits of others.

I mainly buy trade-in games, there have only been a few that I bought at full retail price. The reason is simple, money. I don't have much spare after bills and food. (its my problem I know, I was stupid when I was younger and ran up a lot of debt) ...anyway...

Do others mainly buy games at trade-in value i.e. after a few months of release?

I would say out of all the games I purchase 80% have been trade-ins.

How much would you say this affects the gaming industry, and I mean creators, as for shops its pure profit building...

I don't trade in and I avoid used copies.

I avoid trading in because I like to have a collection, I also dislike the practices of some of the major retailers, which leads me onto why I don't buy used. If I buy a new game for ?40, most of it will go to the publisher and developer. If I buy used for ?35, thats ?35 gone to the retailer.

I dont buy games i just rent them from places like lovefilm, the way i see it is that there is at least 1 game a month i want to play, so i signed up to Tesco DVD rental ?9.76 a month 1 DVD/Game at a time unlimited so i can rent a new game, keep it for as long as i want then send it back and get the next game on my list, whereas if i bought them games would be at least ?20 each.

Mostly yes, a pre-owned copy can be a great bargain. I've never had problems with used copies before anyways.

All my games were bought new though I did buy the odd game used back when games were cartridge based. I don't like the idea of buying used nowadays with disc based games. I've rented games locally but it's been hit or miss with the discs being scratched every now and then.

i buy new. usually a $5 difference to getting a used copy anyways. what a ripoff.

what i do now is buy online. theres always somewhere on the net you can get a great price on anything.

I've stayed away from renting for the fact that when I did the disks where all scratched and I;d have to travel back to the shop/or send away and argue the case. The same risk also applies with trade-ins, but most shops check the disks for scratches, and I've never had a problem with buying trade-in games.

I have to agree with +Coldgunner's comments about where the money goes, but in my situation I simply can't buy the games I want at retail prices, so I have to stick with waiting a few months and getting it cheaper and yes that means waiting. E.g. Killzone 2, now I wouldn't have bothered buying this game if it wasn't for MW2 as I stayed away from FPS on the console. I was lucky to get MW2 for ?26 so I should get my money back if not more when I trade this in. Now I can buy Killzone 2 pre-owned for ?12.99, a bargain, but now 9 months old.

There are exception, I've already pre-ordered Final Fantasy XIII and GT5 but these are games I know are worth the cost, for me atleast. Others like Heavy Rain, God of War 3 I can wait a few months...

No, I always buy games new, even if it means waiting longer and getting it during a sale.

Only time I've bought used games is when I can't find them new anywhere, e.g. MGS 2 & 3 last year just before MGS4 came out.

Usually I buy games new, seeing as you can get insane deals online most of the time, it still works out cheaper than if you were buying new a few years ago.

Only on the odd occasion will I buy used, and even then it's usually from eBay/Amazon/Play/etc rather than a physically game retailer.

Working part time at an indie store I buy new, not to mention I'd rather have the money go in to the pockets of the developer rather than some over pricing and ****ty high street store.

It depends how badly I want the game. For Splinter Cell, Dante's Inferno, Mass Effect 2, and Bad Comapny 2 Ill buy all new. For other games like Bioshock 2 and Alpha Protocol I wait a few months and buy used.

Let's say the retailer paid the ex-owner ?30 for the game. They are making ?5. It's hardly a huge mark up.

Why shouldn't the retailer make a little money? They take the risk buying the used game back.

They probably make the same selling a new copy.

QFT (Y) Most of my games are used and never seem to have any problems with it though depends how much preowned games cost. The only time I buy new if the games is on special prices or a game I really want.
