Fun With new HW Build & Vista!

Recommended Posts

(note: this is an echo of a post I just sent into the Microsoft Windows Gaming NGs on Microsoft's Community Servers - I added a bit more info in this thread)

Ok...here we go!

I was just forced to upgrade my motherboard, CPU & RAM because my previous setup (DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-D + AMD Athlon 64 X2 939 + 2GB Corsair XMS) died. Lucky for me that my HDs were intact, and oddly enough Vista32 booted perfectly, and I only needed to do some small HW-related pruneing for old & replaced devices. My new setup is:

Motherboad: XFX 790a SLI nForce

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4450e AM2

Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot Viper PC2-8500 1066MHz (5.5.5.15)

Video: (Existing) eVGA GeForce 9800GT

Since I was moving from a previous nF platform to a new nF platform, I didn't expect there to be any huge problems with getting the system up and working again. I was right - with one small exception.

I went to try out the new HW build by running Halo 2 for Vista, and I was alerted to an update for Games for Windows Live (3.1.186.0) was needed to access my Live account. I went to install it, and the setup process took me back to my desktop, tried to execute, and threw Error Code 2503, and then Error Code 2502.

Per the MS KB, here is what those error codes are:

Error 2503: Called RunScript when not marked in progress.

Error 2502: Called InstallFinalize when no install in progress.

These appear to be setup / install-related errors and not actual software errors. I'm thinking that the only way around would be for me to uninstall Halo 2 & MGfWL and try again - or is there another way to fix this?

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks!

You say this like it'd be your last resort, it should be your first, surely a 5 min reinstall is faster than posting on two forums and waiting for replies.

Anyway as anaron pointed out definitely make your your .net is up to date and I presume you have all service packs/drivers up to date also?

  • 4 weeks later...

Acutally, the problem has been solved!!!

For some reason, the permissions on everything under the C:\Windows\Installer directory had NOTHING showing - no check boxes at all.

Once that got taken care of, all of the updates went perfectly!

Go figure, eh?

Thanks again, folks!
