Back of FF13 Box Leaked, No Install & Lossless Audio for PS3 Version

Recommended Posts

What appears to be the back of the Final Fantasy XIII boxart over in Japan has leaked onto the web - and the image confirms some long-debated questions about the final release of the game.

Specifically, the back of the box states that the game has No Optional or Mandatory install, only using up 500kb of hard drive space for a save game. This is great news for PS3 owners, and indicates that the game will run as smoothly as the demo did.

The image also confirms that the PS3 version will have super high quality LPCM 5.1 audio and the CGI sequences will be in full 1080p HD rather than the 720p that was feared.

While the game itself does run in 720p, this means the FMVs on PS3 will be of the highest possible quality. This may be the advantage PS3 will have over Xbox 360, as fitting lossless audio and large FMVs on a DVD will prove difficult.

Do bear in mind that this is an unconfirmed leak, so take the details on the image below with a pinch of salt! We're trying to confirm it and will update if we do.

Final Fantasy XIII will be hitting Western stores in March next year. If you fancy taking control of Lightning and co this year you can Preorder the region-free Japanese version from the guys over at Play-Asia. We also recommend you check out our FF13 Product Guide!

I don't understand the second sentence. Does this mean that PS3 games suffer some kind of performance hit by being installed to the hard drive? Doesn't make sense...

The reverse, that some games run would run badly w/o an install. But most games that don't require or even offer an install, especially recent releases (Uncharted, Killzone, etc.), run great, they just hiding loading well.

I actually prefer installing the game to HD. Great feature on the 360 to be able to install the entire game to the drive.

be a gamer and not a fanboy, so guys toss your xbox360 from a window and go buy immediatly a ps3 for FFXIII.

Unless you have a self-installed 500GB hard drive, you wouldn't be able to install PS3 games, especially ones with 1080p FMV and lossless audio.

Installs on the PS3 are usually just enough graphical assets to stream from the HDD while you play from the disc to keep it from running slow or having insane load times.

With each game (well, exclusives anyway, multiformat are probably far less) being 25GB then that's not really an option on the PS3.

Final Fantasy has never interested me so I couldn't really care less about this anyway, but I suppose it's good for those who do...

So TVs will switch between the 2 resolutions?

Most likely the game will be upscaled to 1080p.

Some PS3 games do that, MGS4 is one of them, it runs in 1080p for example, but it's 720p native.

You probably shouldn't mention Killzone as a game that hides loading well. Uncharted does, but Killzone really could have benefited greatly from an optional installation. From the videos I've seen it looks like FF13 has pretty quick transitions between the overworld and battle, so I hope that it never feels like it could have used the option.

Indeed that was the one thing that I felt let Killzone down was the pauses in game while it loaded in a new section. Was only 2-3 seconds at a time, but broke up the gameplay for me.

I just can't get over some of the comments in that thread. apparently MW2 is Xbox exclusive...

Lossless audio and High res FMV were already expected to be the advantage of the PS3 version.

I'm just wondering if the Asian Version of FF13 will have English Subs, as most games that are from the Asian Region do.......I might be tempted to order it in if it does!

EDIT:

Just searched on Google & found this from an article on Kotaku.

This version could have the original Japanese language track with Chinese/Korean/English subtitles or it might be the English language version with Chinese/Korean subtitles. According to Chou, the language hasn't yet been decided.

Best Pre-Order price I can find that will ship to the UK is Yes Asia - ~$92.99 / ?56.30

This will be GOTY.

True story.

Not with the lame floating running animations! I love FF but I can see that bugging me big time! Shouldn't be like that anymore!

I am still highly excited for this game though (Y)

Did anybody expect the PS3 version to not be better in the first place? If you have both systems great, get it for the PS3. I guess I'll just have to suffer through the 360 version.
