Over Thanksgiving weekend, the getting was good for Microsoft. How good? According to Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Aaron Greenberg, "biggest sales week of the year" good.

"Great #BlackFriday results just in, biggest sales week of the year for #Xbox360, more than 2xs previous week sales," he tweeted.

Greenberg stopped short of producing any concrete numbers, though. Here's hoping Microsoft fills in that particular blank over the coming days.

Now then, Sony, what say you?

Well he said that they sold about 2x as many consoles as preceding weeks and this site claims that 65,000-70,000 units per week was the norm. That means approximately 130,000-140,000 consoles. Official numbers are not calculated yet.

Official numbers would be better, but thank you. I was going to look up previous weekend sales and do the calculations myself.

No numbers probably (certainly?) means they didn't do as good as PS3. There was never a chance to go past Wii anyway.

numbers please

They probably won't release any numbers and we'll need to wait for the NPDs for the whole of November to see how Thanks Giving affected the sales. To be fair the "2x" comment was accurate enough for those wanting to know, probably around 160-200k for Thanks Giving.

They're obviously lower than Sony/Nintendo, but MS really dropped the ball with their bundles, the games they packed in were pretty horse **** compared to the PS3s bundles (Lego Batman and Pure?). Then Nintendo, well, New Super Mario Bros was shifting the Wii itself.

I think last year MS managed something like 700k+ for the month of November? Sony only done around 330k I think (for the whole month :laugh: ).

edit: November 2008

* Wii -- 2,040,000

* Nintendo DS -- 1,570,000

* Xbox 360 -- 836,000

* PlayStation Portable -- 421,000

* PlayStation 3 -- 378,000

* PlayStation 2 -- 206,000

Holy **** @ Wii, it might hit around 800-900k this month, but 2 million last year? 360 was nuts as well.

I was talking about last year when I said 330k. Which I was slightly off with, as I posted above they done 378k. Just goes to show you how badly they were doing last year if they managed to outsell the whole month of November 2008, in one week in November in 2009.

It is a good game, but MS should really of been bundling "big" exclusive titles, if they had put Halo 3 and maybe say Forza 3 in a bundle, it would of flown off shelves. Bundling 2 multiplatform titles from 2008 just doesn't catch the eye as much as 2 exclusive titles - Even 2 2008 exclusive titles, GoW2 and Halo 3 would've been a much better choice than Pure/Lego Batman.

Lots of these buyers are first time owners, GoW and Halo are considered 2 must have 360 titles, Pure and Lego Batman not so much, so it doesn't really matter that they'd be 2 exclusives from 2008, they're flashy pack ins to have.

may be a strategy behind it

360 is generally known as a hardcore system therefore anyone who wanted to play halo/gears have prob got it already

this bundle is to draw in the casuals n kids

Why would people who don't own a 360 have bought Gears and Halo before buying the console? :rofl:

Bundles are made 99% of the time to try and offer value to new buyers, if MS were packing in two brand new, or fairly new multiplatform titles, say AC2 and Batman, you could argue money value, but Pure and Lego Batman are old games, not worth much.

However two big exclusive titles hold value even if they're old from the point of view they're must play games for the system, such as packing in Gears and Halo. You could even upgrade Halo 3 to Halo ODST and Gears 2, that would've been a kick ass bundle.

If they were wanting to offer diversity they could've adopted the approach of different stores offer different bundles.

People buy the hardware when they can afford it, or when something is on offer. Thanks Giving seems to be a time Americans go absolutely bonkers spending money, even in the middle of a recession. Not offering some bundles with highly acclaimed 360 exclusives was a missed opportunity.

With Christmas weeks away there will be many kids relying on their parents wallets to buy them their gaming systems, and what do kids love? Halo :rofl:

Wasn't last years holiday bundle Lego Indiana Jones and Kung-Fu Panda? I don't think pack-in games are really that much of a factor, although the Wal-Mart PS3 bundle was pretty impressive. And let's not ignore the the MW2 bundle that came out just a few weeks ago either. And finally, let's wait and see what NPD has to say, if we have learned anything it's not to trust press releases from any of these companies, no doubt the PS3 will have an awesome holiday season with the price drop and these bundles, but the proof is in numbers from somewhere besides corporate press reelases and Aarron's Twitter feed.

Looks like Microsoft did pretty well...

November NPD numbers are in, and... well, this news editor is pretty surprised, honestly. While the Wii came in first with a staggering 1.26 million units, the Xbox 360 managed to outsell the PlayStation 3 by more than a hundred thousand units, selling 819.5 thousand consoles to the PS3's 710.4K. This is particularly surprising given Microsoft's silence during Sony's post-Black Friday sales number gloating, as well as the advertising onslaught Sony has carried out in the wake of the PS3's "relaunch" with the Slim in Septemer. Meanwhile, Modern Warfare 2 was the beast everyone expected it to be, posting sales of 4.2 million on Microsoft's console (compared to 1.87 million on the PS3, a difference of approximately 2.25:1), and Assassin's Creed II and Left 4 Dead 2 both posted very strong debuts with 794 and 744 thousand copies sold, respectively. Conversely, Assassin's Creed II sold 448K units on the PS3, a difference of about 1.77:1. It bears mentioning that Modern Warfare 2 was, for all intents and purposes, marketed as an Xbox 360 title, while Assassin's Creed 2 bore heavy PlayStation branding. The Xbox 360 SKU for Dragon Age came in number 9 for the month, with 362.1K in sales, while its PS3 counterpart failed to break the top ten.

Analysts are also likely taken aback at the numbers, given their prior predictions for the Xbox 360's sales presence for November; Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicted 650K Xbox 360s sold versus 700K PS3s, and EEDAR analysts predicted 700K and 725K for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 respectively.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier offered the following observations about the sales numbers, stating "The industry declined 7.6% versus last November, but still produced enough revenue to make this month the second-best November in industry history. YTD the industry is still up 7% over 2007. I think we all have to realize the incredible year that was 2008." Regarding Modern Warfare 2 sales, Frazier commented that "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level. Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September '07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3's daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November."

Well, MS just let NPD do the talking for them in this case. It really makes me wonder if the 360 design team is picking up on all the rehash nintendo and sony are doing with their systems and are thinking of doing the same with the 360 at some point?

I'd find it pretty interesting if we got a redo on the 360+ Natal later this year as a new SKU.

I figured sell of the Wii would slow eventually, and even though it leads the pack sales have slowed. I'm really surprised things lasted this long. I may be wrong but I feel like the next console to take off will be the PS3.
