Announced just hours ago on the PlayStation EU Blog, GT Academy 2010 will be held in a brand new demo of Gran Turismo 5 hitting the PlayStation Store on December 17, 2009. The demo will feature a stock and tuned version of the Nissan 370Z, and, while Sony has decided not to release the track just yet, I have been aware of the competition for some time now and GTPlanet reveal the demo will include either Spa Francorchamps or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. However, Sony described the track as a "specially created section of a new Gran Turismo 5 circuit", which suggests to me it's the Indianapolis GP Circuit, as it is quite literally a "section" of a larger circuit. (Let's not forget it was also the big track prominently shown in Gran Turismo 5's E3 2009 trailer.)

The GT Academy competition will work much like it did last time, only it's expanded to include all of the countries listed after the jump ? though if you're from the United States like myself, don't bother looking. Although it's more than a little disheartening to be left out of the competition for a second time, Sony's blog post assures us that countries not included in GT Academy will still get to try out the demo. Bring on the 17th!

UPDATEi>: A few more specifics have been announced on the GT Academy Facebook page: anyone who has ever held a national or international racing license or who is under the age of 18 is exempt from the competition. It will begin on December 17th and will end of January 24th, and will consist of two "stages", each featuring new circuits:

Stage One ? will offer Gran Turismo fans a sneak preview of the hotly-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 game, due for release during 2010. Competitors will record flying laps on a time trial-based track available via PlayStation?Network, accessed through PS3. Unlike the first GT Academy, participants will not have to enter the competition using the GT5 PrologueTM game itself, and so even more hopeful racing drivers are expected to take part.

Stage Two ? the holders of the twenty fastest online lap times from each participating country will qualify for their national final event. Tensions will run high as they battle each other on another exclusive Gran Turismo 5 level for the chance to move to the next phase of the competition.

Kazunori Yamauchi, president of Polyphony Digital and creator of the Gran Turismo series, shares Wijnen's enthusiasm. "This has been a very rewarding partnership. The whole GT Academy concept is very close to my heart. Our target with the Gran Turismo series has always been to come as close as possible to a real driving experience. To witness the level of driving achieved by GT players after a relatively short space of time at the GT Academy was very satisfying for me and I look forward to seeing the 2010 finalists in action. I am also very happy to have the opportunity for our GT community to have a preview of the Gran Turismo 5 game."

The online section of the game will run from 17 December until 24 January with national finals following soon afterwards. The GT Academy itself takes place from 26 February until 3 March. The two winners will have to quickly clear their diaries, as their intensive training programme will start immediately and culminate in one driver racing in the opening European GT4 Cup race that could be at Silverstone on 2 May.

Hello everyone, its
here
, European Brand Manager. Following the groundbreaking success of the
last year and as part of our activities around the forthcoming launch of
, I am delighted to officially unveil GT Academy 2010.

On 17th December exclusively via the
, we will be launching the GT Academy 2010 Time Trial. The time trial will be the only way into this year's Academy, and if you've got what it takes it could be the start of a life-changing journey.

Last year the GT Academy programme unearthed a real driving talent in the form of Lucas Ordonez from Spain, who after winning the GT Academy went on to drive for the Nissan PlayStation race team and take an astonishing second place in the GT4 Championship ? all in his first season!

This time around the Academy is even bigger and better, and competition is bound to be pretty fierce ? perhaps best of all though for Gran Turismo fans, it will be the first opportunity to get a hands-on taster as to what Yamauchi-san and his Polyphony team have been carefully crafting and polishing at their Tokyo base.

Qualify in the top twenty within your country and you will be invited to a national final event, where you will pit your wits against the best Gran Turismo drivers in the country. If you make it from there only then will you join the elite 20 that will be taken into the GT Academy 2010.

Only the two best drivers will make it out of this 5 day test of nerve and skill. From there will follow an intensive driver training schedule from which we will select our one GT Academy ace.

The time trial features the stunning Nissan 370Z in two guises. Firstly a blisteringly fast, race-tuned monster and secondly an only slightly less fearsome non-tuned version.

The 370Z is the most recent of the new range of cars wearing the famous 'Z' brand revived by Japanese manufacturer Nissan. The car has been specially chosen for its challenging but hugely entertaining rear-wheel drive dynamics and the time trial should allow GT novices and veterans alike to get a real idea of what its like to get to grips with this sensational car

To enter the Academy racers will have to post their best overall leaderboard times negotiating a specially created section of a new Gran Turismo 5 circuit. This best time will be a composite of two separate runs ? one with the tuned vehicle and the other with the non-tuned version.

You will have the opportunity to keep refining your overall best time from the launch of the demo right up until the close of this time trial stage at 24.00 CET on 24th January 2010.

To give a flavour of what the GT Academy is all about, check out this trailer.

The GT Academy will run in the following countries:

  • UK

  • Ireland

  • France

  • Switzerland

  • Italy

  • Germany

  • Austria

  • Denmark

  • Norway

  • Finland

  • Sweden

  • Spain

  • Portugal

  • Netherlands

  • Belgium

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

However gamers in countries not mentioned on the list need not fear as there will be a special Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Challenge for them to get to grips with it, too.

The first full Gran Turismo title for PS3, Gran Turismo 5 will give you even more of the astounding realism, design and in-car physics that the series has won acclaim for ? it's the drive of a lifetime. You'll get to tackle the world's most famous racetracks, rendered in High Definition graphics ? and you'll get behind the wheels of some of the most legendary cars in motor racing from past to cutting-edge present. The return of a gaming legend is imminent and your first glimpse is arriving in the form of a playable time trial on December 17. It's not much of a demo and 'test-drive'. It's more a 'hey you can feel the chassis and play with all the fiddly gadgets'. Still can't wait to try it though :p

True but most people are just eager to see if the new physics and damage are up and running to compare to GT5P.

I was about to ask if there were any differences from GT5P outside of a **** ton of additional content, good to hear.

Similar to previous games in the series, Gran Turismo 5 is all about realistic driving. Every car in the game, with hundreds to choose from, handle just like the real things, from the screeching of the tires to the slow but steady roar of the engine going from zero to 60. The excellent variety of events also gives you plenty to do (including, for the first time in the series, full NASCAR support), so if one racing event doesn't go your way, you're welcome to try out another through the World Map guide. It's this kind of diversity that will make Gran Turismo 5 a racing game you'll appreciate, no matter where your skills lie.
Not only will the game play like a true driving simulation, it'll also look like one. Powered by the PS3 hardware, Polyphony Digital's latest roadster is the most impressive in the series to date. We caught a glimpse of several trailers, and the designers have created a near photo realistic masterpiece. The car models look gorgeous, no matter which of the 950+ vehicles you select. (Even the goofy electric cars look kind of cool.) The game also has an enhanced cockpit view, so you really feel like you're behind the wheel of one of these bad boys, rather than cruising around with a second-rate facsimile. Vehicle damage also makes an appearance, a first for the series. There are also plenty of tracks, with 60 layouts to choose from scattered across various countries, including Japan and Europe. In addition, the much-rumored Track Editor is a huge addition, letting creative minds build their own tracks from scratch. (Sony has yet to confirm this.)
A single-player campaign comes standard, and Gran Turismo 5 shouldn't disappoint. Several racing modes and tournaments are available throughout the game, along with a variety to cars to expand your personal garage. Some cars are obviously better than others, but you have freedom of choice as to what you want, save for some of the higher-cost models. (You really need to earn those.) If you're having trouble, the game graciously teaches you the basics through the License Test mode.
Along with the strong single-player component, Gran Turismo 5 heavily supports multiplayer as well. Two-player split-screen racing runs smoothly on the PS3, so you can race against a friend. The game also provides full support through the PlayStation Network, allowing you to take on several others in a race and download/upload ghost racers to compete against; expect hugely competitive leaderboards once this game launches worldwide. Other online features include photo albums to share with your fellow racers and YouTube video exports, so you can post your best races on the Internet.
Most of the other series mainstays make a return. A photo editor lets you shoot pictures of your best rides, a tuning shop lets you tweak the performance of any of your cars and a car dealer allows you to trade up and maintain all the rides in your garage while talking with fellow drivers via text/voice chat. Community plays a huge part in Gran Turismo 5, so you should definitely jump right in. Even if you're a rookie, there's a place for you.

People moan when sequels come too quickly, and then they moan when they don't come quick enough.

Let's face it, moaning is the "in" thing these days :p It's like the GT5P "demo", people moaned that it wasn't "true HD" but seriously why does it matter? would you even of noticed if nobody mentioned it? hell even people kicked a stink about how Halo 3 wasn't really 720p...surely people have better things to do then over analyze games with a fine toothed comb? but clearly not

It's only been what 5 years since the last one?

And your point is? :p GT5 is being built from the ground up, no code from GT4 was carried over. To add to that, they are developing it for a console that is notorious for being a pain in the butt to develop for..5 years isn't much in perspective (well I think so).
