Gran Turismo 5 Demo Hits December 17

Recommended Posts

It does show off the new physics, and if you care very little for GT Academy then yeah obviously not a demo for you.

Honestly though I think it is an extremely valid and an incredibly fair point that to have something out for public consumption that by all intents and purposes needs a disclaimer, well that is just not that good of marketing. You can defend it all you want but I think you are missing the pretty simple point, it confused the hell out of a lot of people, myself included. I think that is the point being made and I 110% agree.

TBH I never heard of the GT Academy, I only have a slight interest in GT thanks to the free Prologue I think it was as I did enjoy that some, but I am not a big sim racing person, but since GT is among if not the premiere title(s) on the PS3, well I downloaded this demo based on the popularity of the name of the series. All I really knew was it was some kind of time trial that some people would then get a trip to somewhere if they had the top score, and I only knew that because I read it here.

I 110% thought that this was a full representation of the game, but that the representation just had a very specific purpose, that it had the time trial contest.

And to be honest, I did think to myself the graphics did not look as good as I thought they would, but I still thought they looked good and I still plan, as I always have, to fully rent GT 5 when it does come out.

Again though I think it is a pretty fair and valid argument that a decent amount of us, myself included, just saw GT in the name and assumed it was a demo of the next GT coming out, and none of us had a clue nor really care about the GT Academy. And that is not our fault whatsoever.

Larry each instalment of GT has sold over 10+ million copies, the people who buy their GT games are clued up, they know what is what.

It was explained on both PS blogs and on the the PSN store it was a time trial for GT Academy, there's not much else Sony can do if people aren't willing to read. The trial has a specific purpose and has to be released for GT Academy, it's how they recruit. All Sony have said is you get an idea of what the new physics for GT5 will be like.

And for one I would of thought common sense would let most people know not many racing demos get released as a time trial with 1 car.

Anyway, it's a non-issue on Neowin I've now explained to all of you what the purpose of it is, so I don't see the need to feel worried about other people, in a month or two all of this won't matter anyway.

You can argue it's not your fault you don't know what GT Academy is, but it's plastered all over it and if unsure all you had to do was read either PS Blog or Google it.

edit: You don't even need to do the above, the store itself before you even download it explains...

Maybe my titling of this topic was misleading, but the above does not say Gran Turismo 5 Demo.

"Celebrity" Laps From the GT5 Demo

Before the Gran Turismo 5 Time Trial Demo was released to the public, it was open to a few members of the press and special VIPs involved with the GT series. While their hot laps and replays were taken offline when the leader boards were reset, they live on thanks to more videos via TaxiGamer. Below you'll find clips of Kazunori Yamauchi and the first GT Academy winner, Lucas Ordonez. Six-time WRC champion Sebastian Loeb was also spotted in the rankings, though I can't find any video footage of his lap at the moment. If you have it, please share the link below!

Kazunori Yamauchi -- Normal Car -- 1′50.080

Lucas Ordonez -- Tuned Car -- 1′37.499

Someone picked up on this from a newish video,

Ken Nomura?

I have no idea who that guy is, but it might mean named drivers in GT5.

Also apparently the Super GT is confirmed

I have to ask then what graphics engine is this version using? If what you say AB this should not be taken as a measure of how the final product will look right? Can you tell me what stage in development this version is from? It looks worse then Prologue in my eyes.

Don't get me wrong I will still play the game when it comes out. I still need to see more evidence that it will both look and play better then Forza 3, before in my own mind I can declare it the better racing game.

How could I possibly know that? All I know is what common sense tells you, for a build of something to be released to public it has to have a cut off point for Q&A, which is usually a month or two, then add to the mix this is a 200mb download, kept low on purpose so people from the whole world can take part (not everyone can download 1+ GB easily).

The track is bland in real life, go look at the HD videos taken from TGS and other recent game shows and you can see plenty of footage of GT5 in suburbs/cities and it looks stunning.

There's a topic in this section with a new trailer as well, albeit the trailer is offcam.

Graphically GT5 is easily going to surpass Forza 3, it's all about the gameplay that's left.

It's a 200MB time challenge, what are people expecting?

Anyways I have 1'39 and 1'51 on the controller, ranked 126 locally.

Exactly, it's a purpose built time trial, its smaller than most PSN games :)

By that do you mean by country?

Would be good if it were locally as in where you live and maybe a 5 mile radius. I'd be ranked number 1 at everything in this ****ty little village  Dunno if anyone else here apart from my parents owns a PS3, mostly old people.

But to be fair old people have known to harness the power of the CELL to power their stair lifts.

I'm not sure which locale is on my rankings cause not only do I see Hong Kong but there's also a couple Koreans and some flags I've never seen, but no Japan or China.

Now, while I'm in my more mature corner I'd like to give my real impression on this demo; holy shiznit batman! I can't believe the

changes made in driving physics from prologue to this game, the driving model is so awesome and it's a pleasure to feel how the car reacts and handles. Combine that with some very smooth and gorgeous looking graphics and we got ourselves a winner!

Few things though, the feeling of speed seems a bit off - So many times I've caught myself yelling at the car because the breaking length and reaction time in corners were atrocious thinking I was only going 30-40 km/h but looking at the speedo I was going like 100+, it just feels so slow - Definitely something you have to get used to.

The above is really apparent with the non-tuned car because you have to go at a speed that seems like walking pace through corners that barely requires the turn of the wheel but according to the speedometer you're going pretty fast - So by the games standards, the physics make sense but by the "feel" of the game, the physics just seem off because of the lacking speed feel.

Oh and the default mapping is crap, the buttons are like on / off switches, you can't apply gradual force with those in a hectic situation. Of course it's a minuscule issue as you can, thankfully, remap the keys to your hearts desire.

Also, can't you compare lap times to people on your friends list? Not kidding, this is the first next-gen console game with an online leaderboard list where I can't compare it to my friends - Please tell me there's a way? Perhaps it's for the best as I've only done like 10 laps in total, my times are pathetic

Overall though we have got ourselves a winner and I will be the first to say, to the surprise of many; Forza 3, GTFO.

Is Sethos drunk?

I agree that the handling is certainly much more realistic than that of Prologue, I've not tried Forza 3 so can't compare to that though.

As for the leaderboard, it seems as if it's an oversight that people might want to do that in the time trial. I've no doubt that when the full release arrives such options will be in there.

Really hoping you can do that in final game.

I thought the track was utter bland, but I guess they picked practicality, for example the fact the tracks suited for speed, and the assests for it are probably very low (it has like 3 trees) producing a small file size suitable for most.

I really want either the magazine blow out preview or fully fleshed out demo soon, PD are masters of tease, but it's god damn annoying.

I think Kaz has also said they may implement alongside professional physics a mode which is basically 1 hit (within reason, not a body scrape, like a 80mph wall hit) you're out, take that hardcore drivers :p Will I hell be using that.

Although it's your opinion, I have to say that Forza 3 is much more welcoming off the bat, as well as much more graphically pleasing.

Yeah it's just a padded out tech demo of GT5, but I really hope that the finished product has a lot more polish, I really wasnt impressed at all.

He's clearly talking about physics, you can hardly compare this skimpy piece of crap time trial to the polish and depth of Forza 3.

Until we know more about GT5 it's still unfair comparing them, but I guess Sethos at least likes the physics :p Which is really aside from those wanting to try and truly compete in this challenge, the only taste of GT5 we were really getting here.

Which was disappointing to many myself included, but the trial/demo is what it is, has it's purpose and everyone else has to keep on waiting for more info as PD release like 1% of new info a month. Eventually we'll reach the volcano though.

Yeah, I think they had two criterias for the track; minimal size for the download and popularity of the track. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a really well-known track in the racing community and is featured in just about every racing game and major races, so a lot of hardcore racers are familiar with it.

They better release an extended demo soon, just an extra track, two-three extra vehicles and some tuning options - I really want to try out the tuning aspect of the game and see what visual upgrades we can do.

as well as much more graphically pleasing.

Tons of jaggies and crappy shadows are not graphically pleasing - GT5 looks a lot smoother, more consistent and the animations look better. So in my opinion, it walks all over Forza 3 and when it's done doing that, it gets in a car and runs it flat.

Oh and the heat effect in replays looks nice :woot:

Just seen this on another topic, and before I head off to bed it demonstrates well why PD might have picked this track, low assests, and as Sethos said it's a familiar track

Indianapolis is bland because it is bland.

Compare London and Daytona from Prologue:

Anyway that official Sony mag hits mid-Jan it should have lots of good details in it, it at least looks like the 1000 car list!
