Yes, Michael Jackson Did Work On Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Recommended Posts

Late pop star Michael Jackson had a fairly close relationship with Sega, lending his image to Space Channel 5 and Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. Jackson was also rumored to have contributed to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a rumor now confirmed.

According to an interview in the French magazine Black & White—the "official magazine of Michael Jackson"—Jackson's composer and musical director Brad Buxer says Michael was responsible for some of Sonic 3's compositions. The themes that appear in Sonic 3 and some of Jackson's own songs are not a coincidence.

As for Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog lead Yuji Naka's caginess about confirming Jackson's involvement? This may be your answer.

"And if he is not credited for composing the music, it's because he was not happy with the result sound coming out of the console," Buxer said. "At the time, game consoles did not allow an optimal sound reproduction, and Michael found it frustrating. He did not want to be associated with a product that devalued his music..."

That translation of the interview comes from a poster on the VGMdb forums, who we'll credit for helping to finally put an end to this mystery.

Oh wow. That's very interesting. He was definitely a perfectionist, so I believe that he wouldn't want to be credited with something that didn't "sound right"...

Still very cool though. Sonic 3 was my favorite Sonic as a kid...

On a side note, I just passed 2,000 posts. Cool! :)

The Sonic Rush games are fun Sonic games.

I always had my suspicions that this rumour was true.

its a shame that no one in sega is gonna confirm or deny this... the only thing we got is the mention of Michael Jackson in the Sega Genesis Collection

supposedly one of the composers still has the demotapes that Michael Jackson did for the game... i wonder how much legal work is it gonna take for them to be released? a sort of final MJ-Sega collaboration... after all, if they dropped him from Sonic 3 because of that child molestation scandal, its over now, they should bring his work back...

Actually it's nothing to do with that. It's more to do with the release of Sonic 3 coinciding with the first allegations of him abusing children, and Sega were the one's that distanced themselves.

But yeah this is old news if you're a Sonic fan, you didn't need it confirmed. You knew in the 90's just playing the game it was him. The first time I played Carnival Zone I picked it up anyway..

Listen to the boss music, right at the start it sounds like MJ doing his "wooo" sound, I remeber playing this as a kid and thinking that sound like Michael Jackson.

although with the megadrives limited audio capability it could have been anyone.

honestly tho, at that time, i thought all the music on the radio sounded like Michael Jackson, so i didnt give a second thought that Sonic 3 music might actually have been written by him...
