inVision
I use Black Ice Defender 2.9 can it rocks.. i've tried ZoneAlarm, Tiny personal firewall and some more i don't remember there names. All of those you had to select what is or isen't allowed to pass through and Black Ice is the only one who is "inteligent" So its black ice all the way for me.. Tai
Zonealarm Pro for me...does the business !! but I used Blackice too.. just to see what got thru which .....
Oogle
I hope you realize that BlackIce only filters incoming traffic, not outgoing traffic. XP's firewall does the same thing. So you're only halfway secure with these products. If you accidently get infected by any trojan apps that send outgoing traffic (i.e. your passwords, CC, etc.), BlackIce and XP's firewall will never catch it. Products like ZoneAlarm, TPF, and NPF will catch it.
Kris
Tiny Personal Firewall is probably my favourite. But a router with NAT rox... and with the price of hardware firewalls coming down, it might be worth a look.
Gott
Best free solution: Tiny Personal Firewall !!! (powerfull and professional, but a little bit to hard for a newbie on firewall protection) ZoneAlarm Pro is a fine product, too. Comparable to Tiny, better documentation but you have to pay for it. More newbie friendly. AtGuard 3.22 WAS a fine Firewall ... and would still be my favourite if it wouldn?t BSOD when running XP in a Home Network. Although based on AtGuard i do NOT recommend Norton Firewall Solutions (NIS/NPF personal and pro 2002). They are extremly bloated, hard to configure corretly and even if you mangage to configure firewall-rule autoupdate is a high security risc. And WORSE: NIS 2002 doesn?t always follow the rules you set up! NIS is a big piece of bull****. Forget about Blackice ... lol, i thought nobody is still using it. If you don?t need an outbound traffic filter (believe me: you do need one!) then stay with the build in Firewall in XP! It isn?t that bad and you can setup rather complex rules with it ... but it doesn?t filter outbound traffic ... so forget about it!
Tempest
I agree with shark1: Use a small router with a firewall...I use it over the built in firewall included with XP with no problems. I use the Siemens 2-port router/firewall (not a plug)
hurting101
I just use the Windows Firewall right now. But I am also very speedy indeed: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/12812....dslreports.com

Smoothwall - www.smoothwall.org A specialized Linux-based distribution which turns an old 486/Pentium box into a NAT router/firewall. It's free to download and use (donations encouraged though). I picked up an old P133/32mb RAM/200mb HD system for a few quid and it's been sitting there for 4 months without any issues (well, very few). Installation is dead easy, even for those with no linux experience. An excellent product. (No, I'm not connected with Smoothwall in any way :)) More details here

cub-x
Nobody ever checks out Tiny Personal Firewall... It's free, it's small and it has the NCSA firewall certificate. Complex rules, inboud AND outbound, low memory footprint, complete statistics about connected sessions with bandwidth, port and application reports, etc etc etc I tried a couple of firewalls, but I like this one the most of all.. Erm actually I'd more than happily sit and argue the pros and cons of 'personal firewalls' with you. 75% of people who use them dont need them, and dont even know *why* they use them. The following two things negate the need for a personal firewall 1) Good, uptodate AntiVirus software 2) Sensible patching of any services 3) Common Sense 4) The ability to count to 2 ;) Show me a *threat*, not an annoyance (adwear etc), that wont be stopped then. However, I'd always recommend anyone with a static IP used some kind of firewall, but preferably a second box using NAT. Software firewall running on an actively-used-box will be circumventable, its totally common sense. Argue it with me, go on. I dare ya. Jon
Yeah sorry i took so long, i was busy being drunk :p Before ne one calls me an ignorant c*nt I'd like to emphasis the point i made about static Ips. Then its generally a good idea, I use tiny personal firewall now i've got adsl on a static ip at home, its resonably good, but i really dont worry. IMHO unless you are involved in a scene, and you p*ss someone off, you've nothing to worry about.
Arcane
I have never used a firewall and don't plan to I'm totally fine without it, I never get harmed with it unless someone pings me out (which firewalls can't stop anyways)
Jon
Ur right, u call it 'pinging out', i take it u mean DoS (its new fangled term). *Personal* Firewalls cant stop that. The data still reaches your pc, and has to be blocked. This means cpu cycles, meaning potential undesirable cpu usage (which is a dos). Hardware firewalls can stop em. Intelligen
For those not willing to dish out the money for a hardware firewall then a software one is the next best thing. At least it blocks some stuff, but if your parnoid about security, get a home router or such. I'd get one but my broadband direcpc system is usb, so until i get dsl or such no use getting a hardware firewall
Jon
wtf has that got to do with it. So its usb, put it into a usb box. I have usb adsl, I'd just slam the modem into my 2nd box with a usb backplate, routing to the various pc's around the house. I must be missing something..
