Sethos
This statement was released within the xbox modding community from one of the lead creative directors for the firmware team that makes it possible to modify their 360's to play pirated copies of games. Take from it what you will, but to a person that knows little to nothing about the intricacies of modding, it looks like the ones responsible for the rampant piracy of the 360 games, are taking a curtain call. Goodbye free games, modders. Hello empty wallets."A overview of the history behind firmware modification & the creation and conclusion of the team formerly 'Team jungle' and the story of an unsuccessful extortion. All views expressed are documented between several members of Team Jungle,THX and the scene and are not opinions expressed by Xbox-Scene. A great amount of work has been put into the xtreme, and now current ixtreme firmware. commodore4eva, now simply known as 'c4e' came upon the scene to bring changes to the xbox360's firmware that lead to new innovations and progress to a section within the xbox360 hacking scene Source & Rest of the article at Gamekicker.com

toadeater
Interesting article, but an inaccurate, sensationalist title. Some Xbox mod group broke up because of their own greed, and they publicly released the exploit they used so LiteOn could patch it. What did MS have to do with any of this? MS are the ones who control the firmware and tel liteon what goes on it and what doesn't and does the code and analysis and secures the whole thing, LiteOn makes the hardWare, as MS tells them to. Growled Member Posted December 4, 2009 Member Share Posted December 4, 2009 If Microsoft makes it too rough on the modders they'll take their talents and their money to something besides the Xbox.
bob_c_b
If Microsoft makes it too rough on the modders they'll take their talents and their money to something besides the Xbox. I think MS would be okay with that, as would most honest gamers.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 4, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 4, 2009 (edited) Well yeah, they've won the "online battle", they always were going to, only a matter of time. With devices that rely so heavily on connections to "base camp" to get half the worthwhile content/play online, it was only so long before they beat the firmware modders at their own game. MS never tell people how they ban, so modders are always going to be guinea pigs in the bigger picture. If you claim not to need Live you're always going to be able to pirate, at least with most of the current hardware doing the rounds, however the way in which consoles get banned is quite crippling and even for SP gamers there's reasons to still need/want Live. I think this is the end of playing copies online "safely" this generation, and I don't think the PS3 is going to get hacked at all from the looks of things - Maybe eventually but you can bet if it's taken this long however it's hacked will be haphazard and easily flagged. The problem with the PC has always been it's open nature, with consoles only semi-open, pirates were always going to get edged out as technology advanced. I mean I don't know how far MS can go, but if they're banning game installs, what's next? Banning the ability to use Natal and other accessories on banned consoles? Maybe not so much the hardware outright not working, but the software based functionality through the OS.
