Mass Effect 2 Expands To 2 Discs, Sometimes 3

Recommended Posts

Since I'll be grabbing the superior PC version, two disks doesn't bother me; it makes me happy: more content! :D Us long-time PC gamers remember old multi-CD installs (I remember KotOR I and II being 4 CDs, Doom 3 was 3, etc.), and in the last couple of years there have been the occasional 2 DVD install (F.E.A.R. 2, GTAIV, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, Oblivion GOTY), so multi-DVD installs on the PC aren't new, just not ultra-commonplace yet like multi-CD installs were a few years back before DVDs took off.

Given the likely massive download this game is likely to be and the friendly retail DRM, I may well skip the Steam version for once and get the boxed copy, possibly the Collector's Edition.

pc version ftw.

I am so exited for this game. Mass Effect is one of my favorite games ever, And lately I've been obsessed with dragon age (on my third playthrough)

I don't care if it's 2 or 3 or 4. As long as you don't have to keep swapping back and forth over and over. If it's a case of story driven cut scenes that is the difference, but you can still go to all the places you went to before on each disc, then it's hardly a problem at all.

The problem would sorta show up if the universe was chopped up between discs, so if you wanted to go to the first part of the game you'd have to swap back to disc 1 etc. But I doubt that's the case in this game.

It was like that in Star Ocean 4 between disc 3 and 2 but you'd only have to swap back to disc 2 if you were like me and tried to go for the extra (optional) stuff.

If they haven't used dual layer disks then i say -_- to them. If they did use 2 dual layers, i'm wondering how much data the 2nd disk has on it. I can't believe they have almost 18gigs of info on this game DAMN that's going to be huge. All this said, MS would be pretty stupid to not adopt blu-ray for their next system.

There is probably a lot of redundant data replicated across both discs, seeing as its a free roaming RPG you can go back and forward as much as you want without having to swap back to the first disc, half of each disk probably has all the worlds/models/textures/sounds and then the second half of each disc has half of the story.

If MS uses bluray for games next gen or not remains to be seen, at best we're talking another 2 years from now, and tech moves fast.

It does lend weight to maybe that Microsoft should have gone a different storage route in the first place though given that it was readily available at the time. (although at a premium)

That premium (along with development cost of the Cell architecture) helped keep the PS3s price at a premium far longer than it should have and probably hurt them a lot this generation. MS made the right decision and with local install options it's not a big deal.

I see Amazon are selling Mass Effect 1 2-dvd "classic" version for ?12. Is this worth it? Never played it but ME2 has me interested...

Without a doubt! It's such a fantastic game. If you're into sci-fi and compelling stories, then this is one game you'll need to check out.

Sounds awesome.

should mean more side quests

I really hope they have better side quests this time. The worst thing about ME1 was the incredibly repetitive and boring side quests.

Definitely. I think by the end of the game, I had pretty much memorized my way through that building and all of its variations. And of course, I was thoroughly sick of driving the Mako :).

Talking about ME2 is making me want to play through the first one again. I didn't like some of my choices, so this'll be a good excuse to do them over again :).
