Sethos
Mass Effect 2 producer Adrien Cho thinks modern devs let gamers off too easily. His RPG won?t be any breeze, from the sound of it. ?Sometimes I think we?re pampering gamers too much,? he told VideogamesDaily. ?Just recently, a game like Demon?s Souls is fantastic because when you die, and you fail, it?s not because the game was cheap it?s usually because you didn?t do something properly. ?It goes back to that learning mechanism of ?Well, I tried this ? it didn?t work. I?m going to try something different.? And I think that?s going to be something in Mass Effect 2, we don?t want it to be a cakewalk, you want a challenge.? what
I've hated a lot of games that have made me go back and do the same section over and over again. The serious challenges should come in high difficulty settings. I'm much more of a casual gamer now, so when I buy a game, I want an awesome experience, like watching a good movie, rather than a grinding singleplayer story that I soon lose interest in. Sethos
Just to add my 2 cents; I'm torn  I mean, of course I enjoy a good challenge and I do tend to complete games on the higher difficulty levels, just to meet some resistance and perhaps the occasional puzzle that will get that brain working, for once. Problem is I rarely get in these sorts of moods because it usually ends up in frustration and a lot of head-banging; not an enjoyable way of playing games. Like +what said, I want my gaming experience to be a bit cinematic - I want to naturally progress and just enjoy those awesome moments and immerse myself into the game. When you've died 8 times in a row or been sitting in the same area for 30 minutes and onwards, that immersion dies straight away and now you are just forced to overcome that slow onset of frustration because you can't get past something. So basically I want to be pampered but, I also want the choice to up the difficulty level or perhaps go another route to have some extra challenges in case the mood takes me. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 4, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 4, 2009 Well seeing as I'm like the only person to complete Demons Souls on Neowin, as the ME producer is name dropping Demons Souls none of you should worry about frustrating game scenarios for the sake of being "hard". If they're wanting to emulate Demons Souls then it's challenge they're after, not Ninja Gaiden ridiculous difficulty because there's enemies off screen 4 miles away throwing things at you you couldn't possibly see. Or requiring you to be able to juggle 15 enemies that move faster than Usain Bolt whilst doing a QTE. Demons Souls isn't cheap, no other games given me the sense of challenge it has in years, so I wouldn't worry about this comment, unless of course he's just name dropping DS for the sake of it and does make the game hard through cheap methods. ScorpioRGc1
Nice to see someone on the inside saying this, Dragon Age was like a breath of fresh air for me with how challenging it is. +1 Challenging but not impossible. And Easy is still generally quite manageable once you get the hang of how things work (especially after the last patch eased the difficulty of Easy a bit). Interesting. I might have to check out Demons Souls. I absolutely ****ing hated Ninja Gaiden. Only other game that frustrated me as much as that one was Starcraft (what a cheating piece of **** that game is).
dead.cell
What I want: A game that can actually be difficult, like Treemonkeys mentioned, Dragon Age. Something where you actually have to worry about trying to survive. What I don't want is to have to go through a bunch of stuff I've already done just to get back to where I was when I died. I mean, some games for instance have checkpoints, while others may restart the damn level. To me, that's just over the top for a penalty. So long as they keep that in mind, I'll be happy. Shadrack
I like games that are challenging and have good gameplay. I'm not into games that are hard because the gameplay sucks. I'm not very good at completing games though. I tend to get bored of them mid-way through and go onto something else (or go back and play WoW for a bit, sadly). Nagisan
+1 Challenging but not impossible. And Easy is still generally quite manageable once you get the hang of how things work (especially after the last patch eased the difficulty of Easy a bit). There were still some fights in DA:O, even after the patch that made easy, easier, that were next to impossible unless you left the area and leveled up a few more lvls before coming back. As far as game difficulty goes, I like games that challenge my intellect, not how quickly I can push buttons. Give me more games like portal that have puzzles and what not, not games that I know exactly how to do but cannot because they make it too difficult. I think we need more games that are puzzle-like (in a sense that the objective, or at least how to achieve it, is not always clear) and allow the difficulty mode to decide on whether its going to give an average person trouble or not in terms of skill-based difficult. Allow Easy to take little skill to play, but just as much deduction and puzzle-solving as Hard would offer, then you will truly find a balance in game difficulties IMO. Some of the worst games IMO are the ones that tell you exactly what to do, just make it next to impossible to do (like some of the Portal user-created maps, clear view of what needs to be done, but you are typically moving way to fast to be able to get that objective done). EDIT: This is why often times I turn cheats on part way through the game, the game gets too difficult for me to enjoy the other aspects of gameplay. Its like developers get too retarded to make an interesting/challenging game, so they just add challenges that will kill 90% of their playerbase at least once. Yeah that is the real challenge for game developers, it has to be challenging in a creative and scalable way. I don't like how I can finish MW2 in 6 hours and at the same time playing on Veteran doesn't help that either. I also don't like it when they artificially make the game longer/more challenging by restricting when you can save, but sometimes checkpoints are okay when done properly. I also wish people still made FPS games with a classic health bar of some type, the recharging health is nice depending on the game but it is annoying how every single FPS seems to it use now. If you compare the games of the 80's and 90's to the games of today, I think it is obvious that they have been dumbed down for the sake of reaching a large audience. When I played warrior it was really hard on easy and I only had one mage (morrigan) in my party and I didnt level her well either. As soon as I got her cone of cold though it got like twice as easy. In the hard fights she would usually be the only one alive at the end lol. Next play through I was a mage and also got arcane warrior and it was a cakewalk in comparison. I was a rogue main with Wynn (or w/e her name is) as a healer, Morrigan as damage and Allister as tank.....it was still extremely difficult. What annoys me is they say in easy, spells do not affect your party members, yet every time Morrigan casted Cone of Cold, she froze me and Allister and sometimes my healer depending on where the enemies were. carmatic
i just hope they dont put any sort of trial and error nonsense into the game... if i want trial and error, i'd go to a fun fair, when i play a game its supposed to make sense to me and thats why the "‘Well, I tried this – it didn’t work. I’m going to try something different" part worries me... what if the 'this' is something you've been working on for the past 2 hours, only for you to die at an instant and start all over again?
