Livin in a box
You're just asking for trouble here. It depends, really. I chose a PS3 because this year it has come on in great strides and there is so much more to come with it, yet with the Xbox all its potential has been used, more or less. Look at the games on both platforms and decide if you want to pay for LIVE access (to be able to go online with games, basically) and stuff like that. It's mostly down to personal preference but a lot of people on here will say otherwise.
acnpt
I say xbox 360, from my own experience its great. I got the 360 because it was cheaper than PS3(?27 a year for live is **** all too), and most of my friends have one. You really need to look at the features/games/prices of both, and decide yourself. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted December 4, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 4, 2009 It is really simple to me. If you plan on using the machine for nothing but gaming, the 360 no question in my mind. I just feel from the gaming perspective, while the PS3 is still a great choice and it finally is at the point (has been for awhile now) it definitely holds it's own in regards to exclusives, I just feel the 360 has a slightly larger library of exclusives, especially if you plan on doing any catching up with titles you may have missed. Then there is the performance aspect. While developers have definitely caught up in regards to multi-platform games, the truth of the matter is that more often than not the 360 version of multiplatform games tend to perform better. Whether it is a slightly better frame-rate, or slightly tighter graphics (and in both instances I do mean slight), the 360 usually has the slight edge. This is all with games on both platforms, and there are indeed a few titles that are just as good if not better on the PS3, but I do believe the 360 has the advantage. Now if you are looking for this console to also be a capable media center, than I think the PS3 without a doubt the better choice. People can say all they want about Blu Ray, but as of now, it is the High Definition format of choice, and will be for at least a little while. Also, while both machines are capable of streaming video over a home network, the PS3 thanks to PS3 Media Server which is a free app, handles this task remarkably well. It also depends on your favourite genres - Xbox has a much more impressive FPS and RPG line-up thanks to Halo/GoW/Mass Effect, imo.
Corky842
It also depends if you have a decent gaming computer. A lot of games are console-exclusive to the 360, but most of the better ones are also on the PC.

Jimmy0
What type of games are you in to? I think making a list of what titles you would purchase for each machine would help you out, also take a look at what games are coming out in the near future for each system. Also are you a big online gamer? And if so would you be doing it with your RL buddies? And if so again, do the majority of those have either the 360 or PS3? Saint Shiv
This is such a heated debate, why does this topic come up so frequently? If you want good online that you have to pay for - XBOX, my personal favorite. PS3, free online play and highly customizable. Blu-ray player too. DirtyLarry explains it fairly well IMHO. 1+ XBOX360

Nice one, you say he's asking for trouble, then you follow up with troll bait. where's your proof that the xbox is "used up" and the PS3 isn't anyway. anyway as has been said, go with the games, and if you like online/multiplayer gaming, I'd personally go with the 360. also what does your friends have, helps if you can actually play online with your friends. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted December 4, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 4, 2009 It also depends on your favourite genres - Xbox has a much more impressive FPS and RPG line-up thanks to Halo/GoW/Mass Effect, imo. Well I would think it goes without saying the person potentially buying either console should look at the library of titles and also based their choice on that, but this is why I just chose to point out that I felt the 360 had a better / larger exclusive library, as although I do realize that is also at the end of the day a matter of opinion, it can somewhat be argued with actual numbers that stay away from opinion. Which is why I did not mention any titles. Truth of the matter is someone could turn around and say they like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and Metal Gear 4 better than those games you just listed, so to me what you say is just that, a matter of opinion. Again while I do realize everything I said can easily and technically be labeled and construed as opinion, I did try to keep it all based on what I feel was more things that could be proven my numbers and real world comparison rather than just opinion. Jigoku
Go with the xbox 360 if you want to play online. I own a ps3 and I haven't used it in months. The online system is garbage in comparison to xbox live.
Slammers
There's more awesome games on ps3 than 360 that don't have PC versions. Seeing you said you have a high end pc i'd say the ps3. Also take into account everyone elses posts they are all good.
+Anarkii Subscriber² Posted December 5, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 5, 2009 Lots of games here for everyone. Just choose the console that has games on it you want to play. I was silly - I brought a PS3 under the thinking that GTA4 would be better on it (this was before Rockstar leaked images, comparisons or said anything bout the DLC for it) and was saddened to lean that the Xbox got the sweeter deal for it. Then I read the xbox failure rate at the time was horrid so I was glad to get my PS3. Point is, just do some research on what console has the games you want to play. Both machines are good now, and both have quality games.

Xilo
Look at the exclusive games and games that aren't also on the PC. Pick based off that. I would say PS3. Wireless, hard drive, Blu-ray all standard and has better exclusives. Most of XBox's exclusives are overrated IMO (Halo for instance). However, XBox Live and the store is pretty nice. hackdoom
It's a really hard choice. Hopefully, the following will help you out: PS3 Great exclusives; amazing games are coming out in a few months such as GoWIII & FFXIII (I would choose the PS3's FF version over the 360 one) Free online gameplay Blu-ray player (probably the best option, at the moment) Great options to turn it into a complete media center* Internet browser (Not a great one, but it does the job) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. 360 Great exclusives as well; Mass Effect 2, Halo 3, Fable 2, and many other games (Go to Google and research the great exclusive games that each console possesses) Paid online access and gameplay, which is where the 360 shines over the PS3 at the moment. If you are thinking of spending a few hours a day online, the 360 should be your choice. Also, it's an important factor for some people to know what console their relatives and friends own, and this might be your case as well. Facebook & Twitter channels were implemented recently. No Blu-ray capability but the online video streaming/downloading service makes up for that, at least it does for most people. It recently sported out a Zune channel, too. Media center options with a Windows-based PC* *Both of the consoles can be tweaked in one way or another to transform them into great media centers. As it has been mentioned, it really comes down to the use that you are planning to give to the console that you choose. I own both consoles; recently bought a PS3 Slim, and the 360 I have enjoyed for a longer time, now. For a great offline and online (overall; online gaming, video streaming/downloading, Marketplace, etc.) experience, I would choose the 360. For a great offline gaming experience, a free online, but limited experience, and an amazing media center (including the Blu-ray capability), I would choose the PS3. DDStriker
Simple open up a few magazines look at games for playstation 3 and games for xbox 360 write down what games you think you'd like to play from each (can even check online reviews etc) see which console would give you the most entertainment with those games and make your decision based on that some places even have the consoles setup allowing you to play a game and try them out first hand no one can tell you which is better its all down to personal preference be sure to also check what additional features each console has to see whats better suited for your environment
Livin in a box
Seeing as he has a high end PC, it would make sense to get a PS3 TBH as most, if not all, 360 exclusives end up on PC.

Smashing Pumpkin
Not gonna lie, not read OP. But I will say what I hope everyone else has said, look at the exclusives and also try out the controllers if you can, see which feels more comfortable to you. Both very good choices esp. right now with the elite and slim deals.
