PS3 or Xbox 360 for christmas

Recommended Posts

No **** Sherlock, but if you read the title of the topic, it has nothing to do with pc gaming (Y) The game is console exclusive to the 360 and seeing as the topic is about consoles, it has every right to be mentioned.

Yeah but TC already mentioned he has a high end PC so why would you recommend he buys a console for games that he can already play on a platform he already owns?

Hehe, i think it's pretty obvious.

Whomever disagrees with the ps3 currently being the better console bang for your buck is in denial.

@ $299.99 the bluray/wifi/multiplayer ALONE make it the better buy. things that would require you to spend more $ to have otherwise.

This is why the GH needs a stupid comment filter. It doesn't matter what is available on the pc, this topic is about the PS3 and 360. No matter what is released on the PC, the PS3 is still left without a driving simulator or FPS with zombie theme. Skipping around the fact there isn't a game with the excuse "I can play it on PC", isn't a positive. Sony are losing a sale there to another platform (whether it's the 360 or the pc, it doesn't matter).

As for being in "denial", you do realize I own each console and all 3 hand-helds right? I have full range of choice and still choose to game on the 360 9 times out of 10. I've already explained on the previous page why both consoles lack in media centre capabilities (especially when you rely on software which hasn't been updated since March!).

Boxee/Hulu/Spotify/iTunes/iPlayer/WMP/WMC/XBMC/Steam + net top + iPhone remote > PS3 or 360  :p

Yep I definitely know that PS3 media Server also works on the 360. and I have indeed used it on my 360 if I have it on, but I have actually had a decent amount of issues, especially in regards to all mkv files working on the 360 version, which they definitely do not, it must be their wrapper or whatever it is I am not sure. Then the .mkv's I was able to get working on the 360 had a lot of bugs, like random freezing, just would lose the network connection, etc. Finally since I tend to watch Blu Ray rips of the .mkv files, for whatever reason it seems like once they get into the 7GB range the 360 just does not play them at all. Then there is the fact the Audio Stream for DTS is still better on the PS3, and actually I am not even sure if that feature works at all on the 360? So yeeah I without a doubt believe PS3 Media Server works way, way better on the PS3, at least in my home network it does.

And actually for the 360 when I stream videos the app I have had the least amount of issues with was Connect 360.

There is just one format PS3 Media Server refuses to play on my PS3 but will play on my 360, if I recall correctly it is certain .avi. I know for sure it is the wrapper on that, I forget which codec it is exactly but the PS3 just refuses to even play it.

So yeah while PS3 Media Server works on the 360, from my experience, and that is indeed quite alot as I would say on average me and my wife watch upwards of 3-5 movies a week streamed and out of the time I do use my PS3 I would say 75% of it is just for streaming movies, PS3 Media Server just works much better on the PS3.

That and I still say the PS3 is the better media system for the simple fact it is a Blu Ray player. And if you are talking media, I think you have to include Blu Ray in the conversation, because I said like it or not that is right now the physical format of choice for High Definition movies.

in fact even though it annoyed me to no end, i actually have Dragons Lair coming from netflix yet. Full 1080p and it supposedly finally works on the PS3 after the 2.5 update, so should have that in the next few days. Space Ace is next on my queue.

360 doesn't support DTS through streaming, and there is usually issues with H264 and AC3 5.1 requiring something to be transcoded. 360 doesn't support VOB streaming either, there are some people out there who rip a whole DVD and just stream it, rather than encode. Then there's the HD audio for the small percentage of people who can support it. Lastly the bitrate, I don't think the 360 will do over 20mbps, so for anyone who just rips their Blu Rays and wants to stream 1:1 you'd need to go PS3 (some Blu Ray bitrates will go over 30mbps).

There's other little things like FF/RW not working on the 360, but I use the skip to feature on the PS3 anyway (you specify an exact time), I dunno if the 360 has that.

The issue with the 360 for HD playback is a lack of container and codec support, it also won't let you copy files onto the hard drive (and 360 hard drives are proprietary), and for those that care you can't get all the fancy cover artwork.

For AVI playback it isn't as bad, but you'd still potentially have issues with AC3 5.1 and DTS for any DVD rips you have such audio options with - I know half the content on the net will come with crummy 192 2 channel stereo, but some people do rip their own DVDs  There's then the fact encoding to DiVX is a stupid idea nowadays anyway, much better to encode your standard definition DVDs to H264/MKV as well, better subtitle options and quality/size ratio.

Hands down when buying something with media in mind go with the PS3, but you have to be interested in such functionality for it to even be a selling point.

And a side point, but still media relevant, if you're in the EU you can pickup PlayTV and use your PS3 as a DVR, and also use things like BBC iPlayer for free.

The main reason I choose PS3 was:

Final Fantasy XIII - Did not know it was coming out on the xbox 360

Gran Turismo 5 - Yip still waiting

BluRay - I bought the PS3 after BR won the fight over HD-DVD

Most people I know have an xbox360...

logic? there isn't one :p

I didnt read through the whole thread because it usually turns into a flame war and im not interested in reading 6 pages of that. With that said, get what your friends have. That easy. I have a 360, I bought it release day because it was first and I am invested in that. If the PS3 would have released first I would have bought it. Game consoles are becoming more than just game machines. With Netflix, Facebook and several other new add ons, they are becoming an extension of ourselves, go with your friends.

need help choosing

I have both of them, but I only play with the XBox360 and only watch movies with PS3. So I advice to base your decision on the end usage of the console.

What if your friends have horrible or incompatible taste in video games? :p

ha ha... asking for trouble.... I recommend PS3 because it has got bluray, wireless, free psn and it is reliable(failure rate) than xbox.

all for $299 and if you look for deal you might get a couple of games.

There are variety of games in xbox but ps3 has better graphics(thats what I think).

Go for PS3

I have all 3 current-gen systems, and I must say that my xbox 360 gets turned on more often than the others. Not only because of controller preference, but also because of playing online.

I was never big on playing online before I got the xbox. I mostly played single player games. But the more friends I knew who had an xbox, the more I found myself using it, which completely changed my perspective of how fun playing with friends on a console can really be. At almost all times there are at least 3 people that I can play with on the xbox from around the globe that I can consider "friends."

Now, as far as the PS3, don't get me wrong it's a great system. It's worth a purchase for Uncharted 2 alone. But as far as online play, I find it very difficult to find people or coordinate playing online with it. Mostly because my friends list is very inactive. Most people I know just use their ps3 casually and not as much as I see people using xbox live. And if I go online by myself, I usually feel like I'm playing with bots because hardly anyone uses a headset, and for me, communication is critical when it comes to playing online. And if I didn't have an xbox, I would really get discouraged with online play from a console real quick.

So for now, I suggest an xbox if you have the least bit of curiosity about multiplayer gaming with a console. If you are in it purely for a single player experience, then I suggest the ps3.
