steam downloads = crap

Recommended Posts

OK so ive brought shift and dirt2 off steam, and no matter what server i lock onto i only pull around 60kbs, when i first run steam, i hit over 250kbs but then it slows down to 60kbs average,

Ive tried deleting clientreg.blob ive tried forwarding my ports, and selecting different download servers, but nothing works, anyone got any ideas?

my line speed isnt even capped either

thanks

It's possible that their servers are getting hammered, but that shouldn't be an issue with a simple download region switch. I'd try leave it on over night or something. Maybe it'll pickup speed. If that doesn't work, then try it again in a couple of days.

As Anaron has said, it may be that their servers are getting hammered. I have a 10Mb/s connection and I was getting between 150KB/s and 1.1MB/s from the games I downloaded from Steam last week.

What I meant to say was "it shouldn't have been an issue if you simply changed the download region". Clearly, that didn't work for you. I don't know what else to suggest. Perhaps you'll have better luck here.

Iv'e had this issue before with steam servers in the UK, they are poor in the UK, people i speak to in the US don't seem to have problems.

This seems to be true - I've got a 50mb connection and no matter when or what I download from Steam, it always downloads somewhere between 100-150KBps, but rarely any faster, and if it does go faster, it's for very brief periods.

If you're in the UK, switch to Irish servers if you're getting poor download speeds.

I get ~900KB/s usually through Steam. Which is very, very good considering.

Also I've found (Or maybe It's just me) the download speeds are more reliable if you double click the game and let it download on it's own.

Yeah, I usually hit my cap, which is at roughly 375KB/s or so. :ermm:

Just out of curiosity, have you tried changing your connection speed in Steam itself? I know when you first launch Steam it asks you a few questions, and one of them is what is your download speed, and I have actually found changing that number does actually have an affect on what speeds you will get. So try changing that a few speeds up and down and see if that makes any difference. It very well might, and as crazy as this sounds, I think you can actually set it to high and it might not work properly as a result.

With that said, Steam provides by far the slowest downloads on my comp. When I connect to my Newsgroup server, I get almost 3 times the speeds I can achieve with Steam. Newsgroup server I get 3.6 MBps. With Steam I have never seen it go over 1.2 MBps, and that is during total "off-time" for Steam, meaning no major releases, not downloading a new release, etc. I just think Valve definitely limits your download speed somehow.

As Anaron said probably just the servers getting hammered. I actually get really good download speeds from Steam and since my ISP runs some of the content servers down under, my Steam downloads don't always get added to my usage cap :) (but not all, since Steam chooses the best server to download for you, sometimes it doesn't pick one run by my ISP but 90% of the time it does).

dunno what ISP you use, but if its all the Steam servers you try are slow, maybe theyre throttling Steam?

I don't think that's the issue. I'm on the same ISP and I haven't had any issues with Steam downloads. That being said, I haven't downloaded anything substantial recently.
