+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 5, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted December 5, 2009 Upcoming PlayStation Network title Record of Agarest War may sound tempting to fans of strategy RPGs, but if you've got a 20GB system (or even a 60GB system), you may want to be careful. Why? Because a representative from the game's North American publisher, Aksys Games, has revealed that the download-only title will be between eight and ten gigs in size. That's one hell of a big download. Won't be a problem for anyone with a more recent system (80, 120, 250), but man, an 8-10GB download...it doesn't seem so long ago Microsoft were trying to keep online games under 50mb. what
From an outsider: why the hell don't they use Blu-ray discs? Surely this was the sort of thing they had in mind when they decided to use a disc format with 50GB capacity?
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 5, 2009 Author Subscriber² Share Posted December 5, 2009 From an outsider: why the hell don't they use Blu-ray discs? Surely this was the sort of thing they had in mind when they decided to use a disc format with 50GB capacity? Maybe because it's an obscure strategy RPG that would probably have a shelf life of half a day in Gamestop before "Jungle FPS number 274" took it's place. Digital distribution offers the ability for titles to always remain on the "storefront", and it obviously doesn't cost the devs all the packaging. Siren was eventually offered on Blu Ray, but it was digital only first I presume until it sold enough to show it might be viable on disc.
bob_c_b
That doesn't excuse how stupid a 10gb download is from PSN, the service is generally pretty slow and this will be agonizing.

How exactly is a 10Gb download stupid? You're trying to tell me people have problems downloading 10GB? I'm pretty sure there's people pulling down TB's a month on PCs. Heck there's stuff on steam that would probably put you near/over 10GB, most if not all HD movies do, and the pirates who love downloading 360 games download 7~8GB ISOs. Start downloading and tell your PS3 to turn off when finished, do it over night, there you go.
Livin in a box
For those of you who say you have a slow PSN connection then it's you, not the PSN. I have a great connection to them, yet I have free TalkTalk Internet. It wouldn't fit on my 80GB HDD anyway as I only have 11GB left.
.KICK
Article says an estimate between 8-10GB so it hasn't topped Siren yet. However, when you're creating a game that gonna be bigger than most Xbox 360 games then it better be worth it! Most people have a download cap too so 8-10GB will put them off. I personally think 10GB is a little bit excessive for a PSN game. Can't they do compression then you download and install the game then? Seems a far better plan to be honest! Sethos
Can't they do compression then you download and install the game then? Seems a far better plan to be honest! Isn't that already a requirement for PSN? Because everything you download seems to require installation, I'd assume that was due to the compression. To be fair they're throwing it around as a "100 hour" RPG. You know yourself RPGs tend to come on multiple discs for the 360! If there's one genre of games that tend to be space heavy it's RPGs with all the voice overs and assets. Isn't that already a requirement for PSN? Because everything you download seems to require installation, I'd assume that was due to the compression. Yeah I would've thought so, but I can't actually find confirmation of this. .KICK
It is worth noting that its coming to the Xbox 360 as a retail game and the PS3 as a PSN game, that is kind of odd! :s I guess it might be that MS does not want to release a XBLA game thats 10GB although they do full retail Game Downloads now! http://www.aksysgames.com/2009/11/13/recor...60-spring-2010/ As for compression, didn't think much was involved, anything I downloaded such as demos would install but the filesize would stay the same :s 100 Hours is longer than what FFXIII claims to be! Should be interesting to see how it is then.
Michael1406
Just yesterday I got an email from Sky telling me that I'm over the 10GB monthy cap (when did that come into play, I could have sworn it used to be a LOT higher). Buying this will cost me ?5 a month forever, so it would be a pretty expensive game.

Mine is going to automatically upgrade to unlimited next month, as I'm going to be going over again this month.:pinch::, at least we don't have any traffic shaping. I think 10GB is far too big for a PSN game, but I guess its progress:laugh::
Michael1406
I don't pay the bills, so I guess I just missed the info. ?5/month is nothing really anyway. Have they only just started enforcing the caps? To give this post some topic relevance, 10GB is pretty much the point where you start offering it on disc as well as download, I say. How big is Burnout Paradise Ultimate with Big Surf Island?

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted December 6, 2009 Author Subscriber² Share Posted December 6, 2009 I think the Xbox 360 version is coming out on a disc. True but how many games of a large size have you seen on XBL before? We've only just got games on demand recently. PSN has had games of this size before, Siren was 9GB, it's obvious Sony don't mind. It might well be just a preference of the developers they have pretty straight forward flexibility with over PSN. All right guys, I figured you might like to hear a reasonably official word on this, so here it is: I asked around, and it looks like the final size is going to be somewhere around 8-10 gigs. It sounds like a lot, I know, but I've been downloading the debug ROMs at home to take the load off our office internet, and they only take a few hours?I usually start them when I leave for work, and they're done by lunch. My internet connection is nothing special either?about 500 kb/s on a good day. So there you have it. 8-10 gigs. We should a more solid number closer to release. With all of the new PlayStation 3 models 8-10GB isnthat bad. Downloading it, depending on the speed of your internet connection, might be. Before you run off and import a physical copy from Ghostlight, please note Aksys version includes extra content from the Xbox 360 versRecord of Agarest War: Re-Appearance.
