Resistance 2 is a bad game

I have no idea how this game got such good ratings. I just got it for free and played through it. It felt incredibly generic.

First, the graphics are pretty ugly looking. Most of the art is bland. The only part I felt that actually looked good was the Chicago level. I'm playing on a 46" Sony KDL-46W3000 so it's not my TV. I can't believe this game was even compared to Gears 2 by some. That level where you get ambushed and there's smoke everywhere looked AWFUL (I think it was the second level).

Second, the story was so boring and uninspired, after the first level, you don't even care what's going on anymore. Voice acting was average at best.

Third, AI is poorly balanced. Enemy AI always comes charging at you and often ignores anyone else, even when you have 5 guys with you. They can strafe and hit you with every shot, which is ridiculous. Your screen ends up red almost every time there's an encounter, regardless of how quickly you can stand up, shoot, and crouch again. I also think how long your screen stays red is too long. I was playing this on normal difficulty and I'm not some FPS noob either. I got through MW and MW2 on veteran.

Now onto team mate AI. This is probably the worst I've seen in any game. They'll run by enemies without even firing at them - causing you to get killed or attacked from behind because you assume it's clear. They'll also jump out in front of shots you take for no reason. Example: I'm behind a wall, sights down about to shoot and my team mate keeps doing his stupid peek animation and blocks my shots. Trying to shoot down those spider robots (stalkers?) with a LAARK when your idiotic team mates do this is just frustrating.

And then there's the level design of the game where it almost seems like you HAVE to die at certain parts just to know what's coming ahead. The first time you encounter a chameleon and you have no idea what the hell you were supposed to do. The times you encounter them when they come out 3 in a row in split seconds. When enemies spawn through a door on your left only after you trigger them to spawn. Ugh.

Multiplayer was okay. 60 players is cool I guess but felt almost as generic as the game itself. Haven't tried co-op though.

Anyone else feel like this game was massively overrated? It doesn't even come close to GoW (either of them) IMO. By the end, I beat it just for the sake of beating it. Now I can finally get started on Uncharted 2 next.

You played and completed MW2, and then went back and played R2?

I recommend playing co-op, btw. It's where I spent most of my time on the game.

Honestly though, it's been so long since I played R2 (that's about 10 games ago for me) that I can't really remember too much about it in comparison to other FPS games that I own. I did enjoy it at the time, though.

I actually liked it simply because it was a throwback to older FPS's I thought. It is very much a generic shooter, but I thought it was done decent enough to the point it was overall a fun experience. Does definitely get a bit repetitive as well, but it was not awful in my opinion. It was just okay. So yeah, might be overrated so to speak, but I also agree with the above. Check out the Co Op, to me it was the best part of it.

I would agree with you.

I said it when the MP beta came out and a lot of ppl on here ripped me for it but yes, R2 is a bad game.

I'd give it a 6/10.

However, Gears 2 isn't a good game either. It was pretty disappointing from the beginning and far more hyped up.

Pretty generic game for sure, but I was desperate for a game to play at the time (this was during the summer) that I actually ended up playing through all of it. I suppose it's telling that my memories of the game are all quite vague at this point (for instance, I do recall fighting some giant... thing while standing on a rooftop, but that's about it).

It's weird, though. All of my friends were going on and on about how great the multiplayer was (adversarial that is, I never tried the co-op), and I didn't even enjoy it. The idea of large 32-man games sounded cool, but once I actually jumped into a server, it was just a gigantic mess. I didn't feel like anything I was doing in the match had any impact whatsoever on the outcome. Maybe the smaller games are more fun, but I didn't stick around long enough to find out.

If I can go back in time, I would have probably just rented it or borrowed it from a friend. I think that calling it a "bad game" is a stretch for sure. It's an average game, and more than anything else, it was just a victim of its own hype (kinda like Doom 3 when you think about it).

Completely agree with you about multiplayer. The 60 player games especially feel like everything you're doing is pointless.

I suppose it is more of an average game than a "bad" game but that's kinda why I made this thread. I'm just not sure how it got or even deserved 9.5 or 9.0 from IGN and Gamespot respectively. If I had paid full price ($59.99 CAD) for this game, I'd be ****ed.

The review sums the game up entirely... and I owned R1 and R2 because I've played through all the FPS games I can get my hands on for PS3. Sorry, but they both suck big fat balls. They are AWFUL games. Good God ... and the Co-Op does NOT save it!

The first game was mega-generic but I needed something to play on my PS3. I didn't get the second one until last summer and I forced myself to finish it at some points, but I would not go so far as to call it awful, just something you had done many times before. That said, I'll agree with some other people, I remember very few specifics and there were really no "wow" moments.

It's the case with a lot of PS3 first party exclusives this generation, I've treid to enjoy them but there is a level of "generic" feel that permeates them all. KZ2 multiplayer was pretty good, but hardly original (but they did steal the "Best Use of Brown in a Video Game" trophy from iD finally). inFamous came out of the gate strong but got reptetive pretty quick and the morality choices were bunk (and all depth was based on a forced replay where you just did the opposite of what you did the first play through). I really wanted to love these games when they first cameout, but the lack staying power or a need for a second playthrough. Uncharted is the PS3s "exclusive" saving grace, and only then if you enjoy (which I do) the very pulp novel story lines and hammy characters. If that is not your thing, it's not so great. This is why my excitement for Heavy Rain and God of War 3 have been a bit tempered, but I'd love to be wrong.

I'm going to give R2 a little love. Too much hate. I really liked the game. Not the best game but I enjoyed it. Anyone that have me on the friend list can tell I was playing it almost every day. Loved the coop mode. Completed Soldier at Lvl 30 in coop and started coop with Medic but didn't get to lvl 30 because I switched to MP. :p

I enjoyed it too, I spent most of my online time in co-op where a bunch of us had good fun.

And the single player wasnt amazing, but it was better than a lot of horrific games that come out, i enjoyed it for what it was.

Speaking of Resistance Kol, I was talking to L3thalSaber (right name spelling? lol) the other day and said if a Resistance 3 comes out we have to get it if there is still that fun loving co-op action fun.

Oh, and he says you should get Boarderlands, I've put it on my list for Xmas. :D

And we will have to try the spec-ops again sometime next week.

I'd much rather play Resistance 2 than Killzone 2. At least Resistance 2 had mappable controls

Killzone 2 > Resistance 2 :p
