sanctified Veteran Posted December 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2009 The new unibody polycarbonate macbook now uses the same ram, same video card, same processor and, as far as I understand, same screen as the low end MBP. Besides the firewire and SD card port, what are the advantages of the MBP over the MB?
MrA
Doesn't seem like much. For the $200 difference between the two, you get: - -90GB HD (yes, you get LESS disk space) - FW800 & SD card slot - Backlit keyboard with ambient light sensor - 90g lighter - A case that will burn you lap Doesn't seem like good value, even Apple-wise. EDIT: The MBP is also 3.3mm thinner, not that you'll notice.
sanctified Veteran Posted December 7, 2009 Author Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2009 Seems that my next laptop will be a macbook then since my late 2007 MBP is defunct now :(
Elliott
If you want to see differences between the line, I would suggest waiting until January. It's rumored that the Core i5 Annandale MBPs will be released at that time. I still think there are plenty of reasons to warrant the $200 difference ($150 for education), but the Core i5's (if they make it into the low-end 13" MBP) should be plenty of reason to spring for the MBP. Rudy
I went ahead and got the 13" MBP for my gf's birthday, she LOVES it. I don't think I ever seen her love a computer that much lol. I'm sure she would have liked the Macbook but the extra $ was worth it edit: oh and MrA, a case that will burn your lap? Have you tried the new unibody MBP? I've had 2 15" MBP (non unibody) and they WOULD burn my poor lap but the 13" I got my gf doesn't even get warm

Brian M. Veteran Posted December 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 7, 2009 If you sit a white MacBook and a 13" MacBook Pro side-by-side there is actually still a large difference in screen quality. Plus, the new polycarbonate shell is incredibly soft. If it were up to me, I'd pay the extra $200 (my last laptop was a 13" Aluminium MacBook and I'm now on a 15" Aluminium MBP, so I may be a little biased). null_
I would recommend getting the MacBook Pro simply because of the better overall construction, the SD card reader and the backlit keyboard. Then again, I too may be slightly bias towards it because I've owned a 15" MacBook Pro and loved it.
Elliott
The problem is that I cant wait due my work and my masters.I have to buy it this week. Ah, then definitely splurge for the 13" MBP. It's still a better-built computer with a better screen, and the SD slot and FW800 are a nice plus.
suspiria
The backlit keyboard alone is worth it. Makes writing papers at night in my dorm so nice.
Arpit
+1 for the mbp...i had it for a couple of weeks when i thought my late 2007 mbp had died. i really liked it and would've kept it had i not been able to revive my old laptop. on a slightly off topic...their 2007 models seemed to be plagued with issues...i had webcam issues (got monitor replaced), video card issues (got logic board replaced) and my dvd drive doesn't work (hoping they'll allow replacements for that at some point), and random occasional shutdowns for some odd reason... Maybe you should've held onto that new unibody MBP. Yea, my 2007 MBP wasn't exactly my favorite machine ever either.
rawr_boy81
I would get the MacBook white; has the best reputation for reliability compared to the fiasco that seem to unfold with each MacBook pro release.
neocongirl
From someone who has owned 2007 13" white polycarbonate, late 2008 13" aluminum and early 2009 15" MBP Unibody, I would say forget about the white 13", the case is far easier to crack, chip and scratch (mine did), has worse quality display and for the record if you find the aluminum chassis gets a little warmer thats a good thing, it means its dissipating the heat rather than containing inside the case like the polycarbonate :)

Hot
Doesn't seem like much. I've never owned a 13" MBP but I recently got a 17" and it runs cooler than any notebook I've owned. I cannot imagine the smaller and less powerful 13" running hotter. instant.human
i was more or less in the same situation. need to get it around the 15th of this month, waiting for jan. not an option, need the portability but what to buy... i like the design of the new macbook but i ended up ordering the MBP 13" because of the firewire port, my external HDD only supports firewire and though i couldve bought a new one alongside with the MB, the 1TB HDD would also cost like 100? so i wouldve ended up paying the same price. its not here yet but a friend of mine owns the 13" MBP and it looks like a great machine. way better built quality than my 2006 blackbook, and i alyways adored it and its sturdyness. so yea, id go with the MBP. if the firewire is not enough to convince you, there is the backlit keyboard which is great and the slightly better screen plus the SD card slot.
