More on Gran Turismo 5

Recommended Posts

Other than my article on Gran Turismo 5's mysterious head-tracking feature, it hasn't managed to get much press (though, admittedly, it's only been mentioned once). However, it's back in the spotlight once again after a Kotaku editor tried a GT5 demo with a Sony representative. Although the demo did not include head-tracking itself, the Sony rep tried to describe how its implemented as best he could:
The other stand-out feature I was told about was head-tracking. The game will support the PlayStation 3 camera, the PlayStation Eye. While one wasn't hooked up at today's event, it was explained that the device will track a player's head movements. The goal is for the depth-of-field focal point far down the track to shift, matching your head movement. What you look at will be appear more clearly, in theory. So as you look a little to the right, the right part of what you see beyond your car may come more sharply into focus. But the car itself won't turn with your head, of course.
The Sony rep explained that Polyphony's goal is for players to feel like they are experiencing what real racers see. He noted that the feature was still a work in progress and couldn't offer more details about how it works. From his gestures, I suspect the head-tracking will be responsive more to leans than to head turns, the latter of which obviously would make it hard to see the TV.

In other words, it would seem to suggest that GT5's camera movement will be more

rather than
, which is a very good thing.

Might need to buy that damn EyePet bundle :shiftyninja:

Unless you're sitting right up against a massive screen, I can't see how this could work. Surely if you're sitting a comfortable distance from your screen then really you're only moving your eyes to focus on elements, not your whole head?

If it's "developments" like this that are holding GT5 up, then I'm not impressed with PD at all. This stuff belongs in technical demos and maybe future patches/upgrades, if it actually works. :/

I'm pretty sure that comes down to building a completely new engine for the PS3, modelling and creating over 1000 cars, implementing NASCAR and WRC game modes, and creating 70 tracks. Then adding things like 18MP photomode, 2 player splitscreen, Youtube video recording, weather, night racing, etc.

But you know, head tracking might of taken 2 years

The tech itself is already implemented in the hardware of the PSEye (head tracking), all they're doing is tweaking it for sensitivity and how it responds in GT5.

Chances are you've not really seen it in most other games because it's pretty useless for most games. When you're racing at over 100mph however a subtle head movement to check your mirrors could be easier than trying to snap to different camera modes in cockpit view with an analogue stick or triggers.

It's PD, they wouldn't put a half assed effort into something ;) It probably will need fairly optimal lighting however, a pitch black room and it's not going to work...

Yeah, it's not like other companies have tried to cram a bunch of questionably necessary "features" into a product that made it late and overpriced only to underwhelm at launch. Or even other companies that have made products that approximate it in features and maybe even released 2 or 3 version in the time it takes them to make 1...

I have tried head tracking with flight sims before and it was VERY awkward. You have to move your head while keeping your eyes focused on a screen that doesn't move, and then when you want to keep looking forward you have to be very careful not to move your head much. Some people liked it but it just left me with a stiff neck.

I would be curious to see how much they may or may not have improved it with GT5, but there is no way in hell I would buy it without trying it first.

I tried head tracking on a PC game, Live For Speed, and its wasn't that great, keeping your eye centred on screen and moving your head is not natural I prefered pressing buttons to move the virtual head

Will there be a racing wheel that has both gear stick+clutch+hand break?

Clutch and handbrake would be really nice and it would also be really nice to have a shifter with more realistic movements rather than the generic up and down movements. Maybe I'm asking too much but it is a sim after all. I'm definitely going to be buying the nicest wheel I can find down the road, but I'm still on the fence on getting it for Forza 3 or GT5...leaning towards GT5.

Unless the screen was curved and completely surrounding you this can't possibly work well.

Sounds like a lame gimmick to sell more crappy cameras.

Hey bro you played GT5?

I don't really care if other companies release 25 games within a 5 year span, if GT5 promises everything we're led to believe is in it it should be an awesome game. It seems Forza fans think somehow proclaiming multiple Forza releases came out between GT4 and GT5 will actually somehow make GT5 less of a game?

That's like saying just because there was 2398429035728057285 FPS titles released between Half Life 1, and Half Life 2 (6 years), Half Life 2 somehow isn't the masterpiece it is.

Hopefully you are right, sometimes the game that take the longest are the best. I am expecting this will blow away Forza 3 but I am waiting until it is released to make a decision.

They're both exclusive titles on single platforms, yeah it's the talk of the town, Forza vs GT, but I don't see why everyone is so hung up facing them off. GT will obliterate Forza on sales, I think the NPDs for Forza for the first month were pretty poor, it's just down to gameplay now, as feature wise GT5 already has much more. At the end of the day you end up playing whatever title you prefer the gameplay of, or *gasp*horror*shock* both.

Gran Turismo 5 has a lot to live up to, so PD are creating a monster of a game content wise and a completely new engine for the PS3, so when GT6 comes around all the leg work is done. In the meantime GT5 will most likely have enough content to keep people playing for 2 years or so till GT6. Kaz has already said the development time scale for the next game will be much less, the time killer this time was creating a whole new engine for the PS3, an already widely known hard to develop for console and they're shooting for 1080p/60FPS to boot and even have split screen in there.

Turn 10 seem to be releasing iterations on a shorter time scale, but that means less content, less cars, less tracks and some features not making it till the next release. That's fine for Forza, but people have come to know GT for being a car museum, you can bet your boots the backlash from gamers for a GT5 with far less content and not much new for the series would be much bigger than people sobbing about waiting 3 years and then instantly forgetting that wait on release day if the game is jaw dropping.

Well for me I want a nice racing sim and a nice racing wheel and I am only buying one. If I could use the wheel on both games I would get both but to me they aren't fun without the wheel, and I'm not about to buy two wheels.

Well you have MS' proprietary wireless system to thank for that, Logitech G25/27 works on PC/PS3 but would need a standalone unit for 360.

Why not rent both, play them with a controller, and once you decide what you like more invest in the Game/wheel.

Still have to wait until GT5 is released. :p
