PS3 Motion Controller Named

Recommended Posts

Wand, Sphere, Gem. I like Gem best, and apparently, so does Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello, who may very well have leaked the top-secret name for Sony's 2010 motion control device this morning at a conference in New York. "In the coming year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced new controllers. Motion sensor controls, Natal and Gem, these are likely to bring new consumers into the marketplace," he said when talking about console pricing and innovation at the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference.

Sony has since gone on the record to say that "no official name for the PlayStation motion controller has been announced," with EA refusing to verify Riccitiello's comment. I love leaks like this, they get the whole internet talking?

Good work EA, not a bad name :)

Probably just an internal name, I don't know if Gem is all that marketable. The guys on BonusRound even said Natal is most likely an internal name, again Natal isn't that marketable, consumers won't have a scooby what it means/is.

If you ask me Sony just wanted a codename not related to the device (wand/sphere relate to physical properties of the device), just like how Natal has nothing to do with a camera. For the development process such a "snazzy" name may catch some headlines, but for retail you have to think differently.

Bet they go with something like 'Playstation Motion', which IMO is perfectly fine and mundane enough so that everyone has an idea what it is when overhearing someone talk about it. Playstation Motion is also "timeless", carries easily over to PS4, I'm thinking Gem might start to sound a little dated?

I'm not sure if I really like Gem all that much, but I'm a boring ****** and prefer simple and precise names

It could very well be a code word for it. After all, they don't want to be tralking about it all day referring to it as the "Playstation motion controller thingie" so they adopt a name to call it while it's in pre-production.

PS3 is gonna turn into a Wii at this rate :(

You know, the Gems hidden feature may be a virus which cripples the unit into an overclocked PS1 that only supports 480p and turns PSN into something 10x worse than it is

If anything they'll be lucky to sell 10~20 million units of this hardware, unless it somehow takes off I think you'll just see numbers similar to EyeToy PS2. 3rd party devs won't support it gung ho till they can guarantee a return which is why launching such hardware during a life cycle is a risky move.

Just saw this on CVG, I think Sony replied saying it was an early codename. I mean even Natal isn't an official name right?
Sony has said that its motion controller is not called Gem, but it was an early prototype name for the product. "The term 'Gem' was an early code name for the product," SECA bossman Patrick Seybold told Kotaku. "We haven't announced final name at this point."

This comes to light after John Riccitiello slipped up and blurted the name out yesterday at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.

Still, Gem is better than the Wand. Sounds less pornographic to us at any rate.

More through the links.

Pretty obvious it would be.
