NPD: Modern Warfare 2 Sells 6M, New Super Mario Bros. 1.39M

Recommended Posts

As widely expected, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 moved over 6 million copies in the U.S. last month on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, making the first-person shooter October's best selling video game. Settling for third, behind the two versions of Modern Warfare 2, was Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which managed 1.39 million copies. Nintendo's latest Mario adventure for the Wii did so with five fewer days on U.S. store shelves.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II came closest to reaching New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with 794,700 units on the 360, 448,400 on the PS3. Combined, Assassin's Creed II came even closer, with 1,243,100 copies sold across both platforms.

The Xbox 360 and Wii tied for the number of top ten games appearing on each platform. The Xbox 360 scored top showings with Left 4 Dead 2 and Dragon Age: Origins, with Wii bestsellers Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort continuing to score big figures.

The full top ten, according to the NPD Group is as follows.

01. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) - 4,200,000

02. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) - 1,870,000

03. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) - 1,390,000

04. Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360) - 794,700

05. Left 4 Dead 2 (Xbox 360) - 744,000

06. Wii Sports Resort (Wii) - 720,200

07. Wii Fit Plus (Wii) - 679,000

08. Assassin's Creed II (PS3) - 448,400

09. Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) - 362,100

10. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 315,000

Total software sales were a relatively healthy $1.406B, down just 3.1% from the November prior. Thanks, Modern Warfare 2.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has achieved the top spot for first-month sales of any game at the title level," says Anita Frazier, NPD analyst. "Halo 3 previously held the spot when it sold 3.3 million units in September '07 in 12 days at retail. MW2 bested Halo 3's daily sales rate by 16% in its 19 days at retail in November.""

"While this year's top-selling item bested last year's by 283%, it couldn't make up for softness elsewhere. The top 50 games this year sold 5% less units than did the top 50 last year."

MW2 pitchforks at the ready  Seriously though that 360 number is insane, bundle ftw. Still this just shows Activision the way forward, slightly tweaked MW3 for next year, shorter campaign, worse story and another $10 more expensive

This is one reason why I basically consider MW2 an Xbox 360 game

1.87 million copies is a WHOLE lot.

I just checked, Mass Effect according to what I saw, a 360 exclusive, only sold 1.6 million (in its first couple of weeks) as far as I could see, 2.6 million total, and I would say that is a pretty damn successful title. Not comparing it to Mass Effect at all, just putting some perspective on the fact this is not your average title and it sold better than any game in history, meaning I do not think the 1.8 million number can be dismissed.

Uncharted 2, considered a very successful title for the PS3, to date, has sold 1.85 Million. Again, just to put it in perspective.

So MW2 is not just a 360 game. It is without a doubt a multi-platform game.

Thanks.

Do not get me wrong, I can see why you would say what you said, as those are absolutely phenomenal numbers in regards to the 360, but I was just saying 1.8 million is definitely nothing to dismiss.

Those AC2 numbers on the PS3 are kind of shocking too, would have thought that would have been higher.

I think 448,400 is pretty good. Remember that this past 2 months they released Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank, GoW Collection, MW2. People can't get all the new games. I'm one that haven't got AC2 yet but going to get it soon.

And the "worst" part (for Sony) is that the Xbox 360 is the console that can be pirated while the PS3 can't.

I'm pretty sure that while their software sales are lower, having a console that cannot be pirated on is definitely not the worst part for Sony. When an exclusive game comes around for one that lack of piracy forces anyone with an interest into buying, or waiting to buy at a cheaper price, regardless they end up getting the game legitimately anyway.

Plus did you see MS ban a megaton of people? I think it's safe to say 360 piracy has just taken a nose dive. Piracy for all next gen systems apart from the Wii is basically getting axed.

360 multiplatform games tend to sell better for 3 reasons IMO

a) Live

b) Larger install base in America

c) A lot of people with PS3s in America will probably be multiplatform owners and do the whole "only buy exclusives on PS3". Nearly everyone on this board apart from a few PS3 only owners do that.

At the end of the day though, trying to say 1.8 million sales is something to worry about is daft, that's what, 120million dollars for Activision? Yeah Activision aren't going platform exclusive any time soon. Heck they're becoming the new EA, release on Consoles/Handheld/Phone/TV/Toaster

6million people bought mw2 on consoles eh? Wow, it's amazing that that many people can bear the completely unusable mess that is a gamepad in an fps.

This is an "on rails" shooter designed for consoles and they added some auto-aim to this one. You only have to wiggle the tumb sticks for about 4 hrs to finish it.

I played throught it on hardened on PC. It felt like watching a bad and inconsistent over the top action movie and having to click on some continiously spawning enemies with bad AI to see the next scene. With the lack of any form of bulletphysics it was just about following the crosshair.

MP was a joke. Some seriously overpowered perks in a level filled with cheaters and a flawed matchmaking system.

Wasted 50 euros on this piece of overrated junk. Don't know which one was worse, opf2:DR or this one.

Same here.

Pretty schocking figures though, thought the new Super Mario Bros. would sell more than 1.39mil.

Looks like the boycott didn't work

Well, it's only the whiny PC-elite who threatened to boycott and let's face it, they aren't enough to make any kind of difference - Even if the PC version sold nothing, not a single copy the game would still be a major success overall with those numbers.

eh? You mean the one that gives you accuracy in movement beyond what any PC keyboard (which is the main way 99% of PC gamers control movement of the character on FPS games) can do? Two keys for fast or slow ... wow. Dude, wake up. I used to think like you. Console games are DESIGNED to work with gamepads, making the experience perfectly suited. Small closed mindedness will get you know where!

Same here.

It's a lower figure than you'd expect but how much is Nintendo advertising these days? Hell, I've seen like ... erm ... one ad for the Wii or related products in the last month ... I'm shocked that Ninty aren't getting the info out there more. Most people probably don't know that SMB is out. That said ... 1.39 is still a TON of people! And ... it will burn slower than MW2 which was a hype game. Not saying it didn't deserve it. I loved MW2 a lot. But it sold off of the hype ... SMB doesn't have that pull in this day and age anymore. Shame. Still doesn't stop it being the biggest selling franchise of all time! :)

I consider MW2 to be a PC game regardless of sales figures. I would not even consider playing it on consoles even if I got it for free.

You're a very silly person then aren't you? :)

Regardless of how much one game sells on x system compared to the other, the obvious outcome from a dev standpoint is that multiplatform is the better way to go. We're going to start adn see fewer and fewer 3rd party exclusives as time goes on simply because, hell, every dev knows they can make more money this way.

And also, everytime I see these sorta sales numbers outta NPD, when it comes to multiplatform games, the 360 version always ends up selling more. Of course in Japan, for other obvious reasons, the PS3 versions tend to sell more there.

But then MW wasn't trying to target the Japanese market anyways, it's not that type of game for them. They like to eat up their rehashed Role playing games over and over.

I've seen mario ads all the time on the tv here, almost as much as MW2 wich gets ad time everywhere.

But while NSMB was one of THE reason for getting a DS(well utside of nintendogs it's all I have), the NSMB Wii ad isn't making me want to buy the game and a Wii. Pretty much because I'm not seeing any awesome Raccoon mario, instead I'm seeing some kind of crazy stupid mario ripped out of teletubbies in a red bodysuit pyajamas with a tiny propeller on his head. WTF NINTENDO!!!
