My PS3 went on a diet...

Ta-da!

Gotta say the Slim is much nicer in person, the actual buttons look better than the touch sensitive (my biggest gripe when I first seen Slim). Now that it's all black it looks more at home in my all black home setup, no stupid tacky chrome/silver strip anymore.

Anyway my only problem is I wanted to keep the 320GB drive that's in my current PS3, but I think the new transfer system will only copy locked save files to a PS3, not to a backup USB drive :( Meaning I'd need to buy and put another 320GB drive in my Slim, then transfer from PS3 to PS3 over ethernet.

Oh well I think I can live with 120GB, I stream all my media anyway. Give the parents the 320GB, at least until I platinum demons souls (only locked save file I really care about), then I might swap back. Chances are my mum will be recording a ton of stuff with PlayTV and will make better use of 320GB anyway - I tend to just source TV shows off the internet.

Away to set it up and test Bravia Sync, I posted a question about compatibility with my TV/receiver in here and no one could help, so I'll report back myself.

wow you must have some cash around. what is the point !

Parents wanted a blu ray player/media streamer and when they were in America the past 2 weeks picked up a Slim. I'm taking the Slim and giving them my fatty, they don't care much about aesthetics.

But I thank you for your assumption that I'm loaded  Sadly no, I'm a skint student right now.

I remember when my brother exchanged his 160 GB PS3 for the 120 [slim] PS3, back when it first launched. He got $100 back and only lost 40 GB of hard drive space.

Could you not just put the hard drive into the other PS3?

Nope it won't boot without formatting, part of the security system...

Slim is quieter than my 40GB, and the backlit buttons are a nice touch :) Updating it to 3.15 now so I can do the transfer.

I love my launch fay boy. I prefer it over the slims's looks. I dont like the buttons on the slim myself. nor the new finish.

just has a cheap look to it, for obvious reasons hehe.

i am due for a hdd upgrade though.

Congrats. A nice solution for your parents to now have Blu Ray, so it works out.

Me, unless it dies, I will be with my phatty forever, I do also like some prefer how it looks, but regardless no way my wife is having me buy a new console just because it is smaller (I know that the outside design is not the only thing better, but as far as she is concerned that would be it).

Plus I do have BC, and since I no longer have a PS2 if I ever did want to play an old game, highly unlikely, but I do have the option. Bit I have used BC before, on God Of War actually that a coworker let me borrow as he could not believe I never played it. I still have to get it back to him

lost my black 360 2 weeks ago and got a ps3 slim for my b-day, so far so good i'm happy. I do like the look of the slim over the "old style" more. Only thing i regret is the lost of data for SF4, T_T i paid $20 for those extra costume and all of those battle points T_T

Tell her it uses far less power and expenditure will be made up over 4 years of electricity savings

To be fair the savings are pretty impressive, uses more than 2x for gaming :|

Biggest difference really is in the height more than length/width (it's actually a smidge longer).

I stood by this thought as well, but they're better for two reasons, they're backlit and the blue/green lights are on the top panel - It means if you can see your PS3 at night when watching something you aren't distracted by that bright LED (see picture above).

Sorry for crap photos I'm a victim of the ever cheap arse Apple who think it's okay to release a phone that costs 3x your monthly mortgage payment, but only include a camera slightly better than a 1998 webcam.

Still haven't platinumed Demon's Souls?

I'm keeping my fatty because of the backwards compatibility.

I would keep mine (if i had one) for the exact same reason. Plus aren't there like 6 USB ports on the old one and only 2 on the new one? POOOO.

There's four ports.

Yeah 4.

I had one with 4, then one with 2. Really didn't have much need for more. I even have PlayTV plugged in all the time. Only thing I used the other for was charging the controller/headset.

Considering all the controllers have rechargeable batteries it's unlikely you're going to play wired (on a permanent basis).

I guess if you've got a PS3 Eye AND PlayTV that could be a nuisance. In that scenario I'd charge the DS3 off a PC USB or something (if PC in same room).

The direct data transfer with an ethernet cable is ****ing painful when you have a decent amount of data. I know the drives are only 5400RPM, but it's only at 62% (N)

4 ports, + memory card/flash card reader.

The extra ports are nice when you have an external USB HDD, Guitar Hero dongle, Buzz! usb stick, and a USB cord for charging dualshock/sixaxis.

Yeah USB is an issue and really would have been nice to have some on the back on the newer models for things like PlayTV that are plugged in all the time so it doesn't look unsightly. Only real solution is a USB hub :)

Finally!

I can confirm my locked save game files copied over as well. It just deletes them off the original PS3. I thought it deleted everything off the original PS3 in fact, but it doesn't, just locked save files if you have them.

Also the newer DS3s seem to be a slightly different material, less glossy/slidey, more rough. Guess that'll help those with sweaty palms
