Stupid developers and management. Most players didn't rely on the Plasma Cutter because it was better than any other weapon (IMO the fully upgraded Contact Beam was the best). Players relied on the Plasma Cutter because it had to most ammo.

This is a small but very important oversight. And IMO it means that they're not going to fix the root cause of the problem. They're just going to add yet another weapon to the game that falls prey to same limitations as the ones already in the game. Yeah they're all cool to use, but you won't use them often if you can't use them often.

While you are right about the ammo, there was a good reason for it to have more. The weapon was the hardest of all the weapons to aim save for the Contact beam (my preferred boss gun). My usual load out was Plasma Cutter (backup), Force Gun (main), Contact Beam (bosses) and then whatever gun I felt was useful (usually the Line Gun or the Pulse Rifle). You really could play through the entire game with whatever weapon you wanted (probably not the flamethrower though, just couldn't make that thing work). Just max out their upgrades and most of the time they became pretty damn powerful. I ended up nicknaming my Force Gun the "Thumper", because I could walk into a room and clear pretty much the entire thing out with one to three "thumps" of the gun firing. Adding in another gun won't be that damaging IMO either, since you will still be restricted to the four weapon choices and usually that seemed like too many to me. The game would feel far more hectic if it only allowed you two weapons.
