Is it okay?

Recommended Posts

A friend and I are starting our own forums.. I'm going to be using Neowin's Rules (because they're already written out), as a preliminary rule set, just adding a few things here and there..

I just have always thought that Neowin's Rules were the best rule set on the planet for governing a forum, and my friend happened to agree with me when I showed them to him.. so we've used them..

I just wanted to make sure this was okay..

I mean, they're just text written rules. :)

So you are going to give your members "warnings" all the time?

Because I probably wouldn't take that on as much ;) (if you want to keep your members)

I also feel you should re-write them yourselves (in your forum's personalized words), or add to them as you progress along.

I don't feel you should use other forum's word for word rules, but that's just me.

Oh I know. I have no idea how big we'll get, and if we get ... you know, immense.. (say.. more than 100 members) I'll probably re-write, and retool them to our own community a bit more, but I'm using them as a ground work while we have only a few members. We've got a grand total of .. 14 people maybe.. 16 right now including my friend and I.

tbh, i wouldn't bother with rules at the early stage of a forum.

With your base members, establish common sense. Once you grow you can then introduce rules

Indeed, a forum that size should just have some basic rules such as: Be nice, don't spam, no dodgy material and if you have question contact a team member.

That should do (Obviously pad it out a little).

Actually that's a good idea for a new topic

What forum rules do we need?

Or, Help and contribute to making our forum rules ;)

Basically that makes your members feel needed and respected, instead of coming to Neowin and asking here

We would not permit this, no. Our rules were written by ourselves for use on this site only and are covered by the copyright Neowin holds.

We have contacted sites before that have ripped our ruleset to request it be removed.

I agree. Too many rules can kill a new forum. You only need rules after you grow a bit.

 ..

That's... that's pretty silly.

I don't think you can copyright a set of rules unless it's for something like a board game or card game.

:pinch: , At least I had the gumption to ask you guys if we could use and modify them slightly.

Well on every site I've been on, every forum seems to have their own unique set of rules

That are somehow related to their forum specifically

May as well follow suit ;)

Copyright refers to the wording. Neowin have their rules written a certain way but they don't own the ideas behind those words. They just have the right to control the wording.

I can write a description of how to tie a shoelace. I'd have the right to control the wording but others could write their own descriptions. No one owns the idea behind tying shoelaces.

No one owns the idea "respect other people" but Neowin have the right to control how they put that and other such ideas into words. :)

Almost ever set of rules I've ever read are nearly the same anyway, regardless of the site. If I wanted rules I would read the rules of two or three sites and then based on them write my own rules. It shouldn't be that hard.

But you can copyright content on the site.

You asked, they said no. What did you expect, their blessings ?!

You are the one who asked, take it like a man and create your own wording.

So modify them so they mean the same, but are worded differently.

We used this on our forum:

1. No macabre or pornographic material.

2. No Warez or Cracks.

3. No Cursing or Swear words.

4. No Racism, Threatening, Personal Attacks, No Victimization or Hateful posts / Retaliation of any kind against a user, or group of users.
