Xbox or XBMC?

Recommended Posts

I want to get a silent media center pc for my living room. I was intrigued by the recent build of XBMC on the Acer Aspire Revo that I'm sure everybody saw on Lifehacker a while back. Lifehacker article

My question is, is it better to build something like this or get an XBOX? My needs are:

- Play dvd quality video off my NAS via wired ethernet

- all video is ripped to ifo/vob files

- ability to view jpg pictures

- ability to hook up an external hd

- little to no desire to play games on an Xbox

- little need for any pc apps on the Acer if I go that route. MC only.

- silence

- reliability (I've heard Xbox's are troublesome?)

I have built my own PCs and I'm fairly adept with installing operating systems. My TV is HD capable with HDMI inputs. I like the sexy format of the Acer box but I could live with, and have room for the Xbox. What say you?

I would choose XBMC over the Xbox's media center everyday.

Besides, using a PC will give you A LOT more flexibility. :)

Depends if you can afford the XBMC I guess. Looks nicer.

Take it you have a dvd player somewhere else since it'd have no drive.

Same price. The Aspire Revo is $200 and the XBMC software is free. Yes, I do have a separate dvd player.

It is a done deal now, I just ordered the Revo. Thanks for the inputs.

I thought a second hand Xbox would be way cheaper than $200.

I still maintain that XBMC is the best media-centre app out. Now, run that on an original XBOX (softmodded) and it's just dandy. However, not so good for hi-def, and no good for blu-ray, no good for external hard drives. But VERY cheap (xbox = ?50, eg).

no tuner support, not a media center app, just a glorified full screen media player.

Anyway the Revo is nice, at least the slightly more powerful versions. But then again, the xbox would have offered you both media play functionality , full media center extender and Zune video marketplace.
