Shadrack
OMG! I can't believe myself. Ha! As much **** as I talk about Apple too... first I buy an iPhone and that is what started the infection. Then I subscribe to MobileMe (the infection spreads). Now I went and bought myself a MacBook Pro 15". I ended up going with the one that doesn't have the 9600M graphics option. I dunno if I'm going to shoot myself later for that. I'm hoping WoW will be playable. I spec'd out DELL and HP with similar features, and I admit, there was about a $200 Apple tax. But when you take into account a nice design that is full aluminum, and all the other features I said "well **** it" and took the plunge. This is my second Mac. My first Mac was the 1g Mac Mini (with the PowerPC proc). That Mac still works (but the DVD drive broke). Love the touchpad on the MacBook. It feels nice. I also like how sharp the text looks on the screen. Now comes the buyers remorse... Especially considering I didn't buy on credit, but 100% out of pocket. *ouch*. Now I need to find a nice sleeve to put it in (I thought it would come with one....). I also need to install Windows. I have a spare Windows XP license that I'm not using, but I'd like to get 7 (I'm just broke X).

Brian M. Veteran Posted December 16, 2009 Veteran Share Posted December 16, 2009 Get yourself a nice Crumpler slipcase for it. Really can't go wrong with those and they look fantastic.
-KJ
My next notebook purchase might very well be a MBP. Beautiful hardware, functionality and software. As a graphic designer and artist, these elements are what attracts me the most. But my desktop computer will probably never be Apple based. Congrats on your purchase! Shadrack
WoW runs on anythingif i could attach a CDROM to an abacus and crayons it would still work I've played on my work laptop. And it is an DELL Inspiron 8600 from 2003 (GeForce FX Go5650). But when Wrath of the Lich King came out I loaded it up and the new content was hardly playable. Of course this MacBook Pro is quite a bit better. I have a Quad Core desktop for gaming so I'm not too concerned. But I would like the option for when I am on travel. Just the extra $400 (+tax) for the GeForce 9600M option didn't seem reasonable to me for what I will be mostly doing with the laptop. I was also looking at ASUS laptops. One of my roommates bought an ASUS laptop 2 years ago, and I thought it looked and performed awesomely especially for the price. The ASUS laptops they had on display at Best Buy looked like utter crap. They have really gone down hill with their designs :(.

njn007
I am sure you will love it, congrats. As a recent buyer of the 21.5" iMac, i'm very sure you will love your mac. I always tell my friends to get them, but then price is an issue, but it's worth taking the risk. It'll be the last laptop you'll need to buy! And if you need to buy one, you'll have money for it since you won't need it for 30 years! It's also funny that you got infected like me. I originally had a stupid Razr with Verizon. I then switched to AT&T and got the iPhone. Best decision I've ever made. I have my mac now, and will be getting Mobileme too!
LingeringSoul
Congrats on the purchase :). I bought my MBP back in August, and it's working very nicely for me. As for a sleeve, I'm using an Incase 15" neoprene sleeve (like this one, except mine is beige), and I've been quite satisfied with it. It slips into my backpack without effort. Shadrack
I do already have 2 questions: 1. How is the standby battery life? Is it much different from turning the device off? 2. When the laptop is plugged into the wall, if I close the lid it still goes into standby mode. Is there anyway to disable this when the laptop is on AC power? Last night I was downloading updates (downloading WoW, syncing my iDisk) and it bothered me that I had to keep the lid open until it was complete otherwise it would go to sleep. I searched around in the Power options in Preferences and did not see an option for this.
Belazor
I have an additional question, as I've always wanted to own a Mac not only for the aesthetics but to try out OS X (never could get OS X86 to work): 3. How does right click work in Windows via BootCamp?

How does right click work in Windows via BootCamp? Even though I don't have a Mac, I think I can answer this for you. As far as I'm aware, Ctrl+Click enables the Right Click menu. I searched around in the Power options in Preferences and did not see an option for this. 1. You'll probably lose 0.5-1% per hour (I never shut down unless I'm not going to be using it for over 24 hours). 2. By default, no. There's a couple of 3rd party programs which do this, however I can't vouch for their reliability as I've never used them. One way around that would be to close the lid, then use a USB keyboard/mouse to wake it up again with the lid closed. I have an additional question, as I've always wanted to own a Mac not only for the aesthetics but to try out OS X (never could get OS X86 to work):3. How does right click work in Windows via BootCamp? Same way it does on the Mac (secondary click) - two finger tap, or bottom corner of the trackpad click. There's a bug with Bootcamp 2 drivers though - you need 3 fingers and have to physically press the trackpad (this has been fixed in Bootcamp 3.0 though). Shadrack
Thanks Chase and bmaher :) I might go for a 17" MBP at some point :D Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that the touchpad had a right mouse button (persay). The whole touchpad "clicks" when you press it in. If you press down on the left side you get a left click and when you press down on the right side you get a right click. Its all well and good, until you are playing WoW and you need to press both mouse buttons at once (which isn't possible). WoW runs really well, I am pleased to report. I'm running at the 1440x900 resolution 1x antialiasing and about mid-level effect settings (I'm still tweaking). I get about 25fps in Dalaran, and 35-50fps everywhere else. I thought that a 9400M was considered a low-end graphics card. I'm glad I didn't waist my money on the 9600M option. The 15" MBP was about my limit for weight on a laptop. I was about to go with the 13" MBP because of weight reasons, but I liked the speakers and the size of the screen (obviously) more on the 15". I'm not sure the 17" would be very practical (for me anyway). Doesn't the 17" support the same 1440x900 resolution as the 15" anyway? I don't think you really get more desktop real estate, its just bigger.

Well in fairness, if you play WoW without a mouse you're either hardcore or a newb ;) And if you got a mouse to go with a laptop, you wouldn't go with a Mac mouse would you, you'd just pick up a standard USB mouse (or a Logitech wireless one.) After you've played WoW for a while, does the fans make a lot of noise? Grats on your purchase at any rate, I hope you two are very happy together until HDD crash do you part. When I play on my MacBook, I use my trackpad sometimes. I've become pretty damn good at it. :p And yes, the fans will rev up. GPUs get hot, you know. So far, my quietest machine has been this 27" iMac. It doesn't really get revved up ever. When the fans do start get going, they're still fairly quiet as far as fans go. shivs
It's great when you've got cheapskate housemates that won't turn the heating on ;) I've got my PC on pretty much 24/7 and my MBP warms my hands up nicely when I'm gaming.

Pharos
Congrats! I got mine (13" MBP) last week and I love it. BTW, Apple laptops take longer to lose their value. So make sure you take extremely good care of your new MBP and when Apple comes out with a newer model in a year or so, you can sell it on eBay or Craigs for VERY good money :) I would also recommend you use a keyboard protector, unfortunately the plastic black keys wear out very very quickly and get that oily look in 2 weeks if you use it a lot. I use THIS one. Edited December 18, 2009 by Pharos

It isn't THAT great, it is playable and a LOT better than I originally thought it would be. The 9400M is def. not a gaming card. I have a desktop for gaming, anyway. It will be nice to have WoW when I'm company travel (given the Internet at the hotel is decent, which is usually not the case because everyone there including the maids is probably downloading porn off it...grrr...).
