Doli
Does anyone know how much it would cost to send the 15" Macbook Pro from the US to the UK with USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL. I'm going to buy it from my University because they are having a sale on top of the student discount and my friend's Old Macbook bit the dust. I been looking around for the weight and size of the box it comes in but nothing. So if anyone shipped a Macbook from the US to the UK or knows the weight and dimensions of the box I would appreciate it. Today is the last day of the sale. lt8480
You will have to pay import Duty and VAT which will add around 25% onto the price, and you will also have to pay delivery which presumably you will insure. Maybe another ?50 or so. - overall not worth it..... Also if anything goes wrong under warranty you will have a nightmare as you bought it in the US, also I'm not even sure its legal to do what you are asking, it might be legal if it was a gift, but purchasing for someone else through these schemes is usually always not allowed. Also trying to get round these charged by marking it as a gift will have no effect due to the value (you still have to pay import over a certain value). Of course its also illegal to falsely value an item... and anyway that means it would be impossible to insure. Some info I dug up.... http://www.dhl.co.uk/publish/gb/en/informa...h.html#aPar0005

There is nothing illegal about buying a Laptop in the US to ship it to someone in the UK. I will pay with my money and its a better deal than the Apple store. If I buy it online I would have to pay the UK price and the dollar to pound is not in my favor.

Mate, I would highly recommend NOT to buy it from US, because you'll end up paying Import Duty+VAT+ Delivery. A relative of mine bought me $640 Laptop in US, it cost her $80 for delievery with USPS, then I had to pay ?70 for Import Duty and ?13 for ParcelForce and i was well ****ed of, so think about it wisely. richardsim7
True, I would highly advise getting it from the UK instead :/

There is nothing illegal about buying a laptop for someone else and shipping it... however what you are suggesting is buying it through a educational scheme to get it cheaper for someone else... usually these discounts/schemes specify it must be for yourself or family only, and is part of the contract of buying the item - check this carefully as again it could bite you on warranty or something else as they could claim you breached the sales contract. Damn. Ill check that out, sucks to pay for a gift. Gifts are exempt from import duty and tax only up to a small amount (?50 or something I don't know the figure), exactly for the reason to stop people "pretending" to buy gifts... a gift is only considered a gift is fully paid by yourself, if the person it is for contributes or gives you the money for the item it is not considered a gift. So unfortunately even if this actually is a gift there is no way around avoiding tax and import without breaking the law and lying over the value of the item. In M.F.D.Ks example they paid over $200 in extra costs - which was about an extra 1/3rd. If it very rarely cheaper to pay for an item then import it and pay tax and duty and shipping, and even when it is cheaper ... it is generally so little its not worth the hassle of doing so. I receive thousands of dollars in free clothes (design work) and always have to pay the import + tax, even though they are gifts being examples of final work - the items do have a value that must be listed, its annoying but no way of avoiding it.
