Hardcore Til I Die
Please help me. I've forwarded all of the necessary ports for live. I've added my XBOX to DMZ in router. I've enabled uPnP in my router. My NAT is still moderate. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks in advance.
.KICK
It'll be the router, I've had this a few times on my rubbish DLink even when the Xbox 360 is in DMZ. Turn off everything connected to the router then turn the router off at the wall for 30 seconds then turn back on. Start just the Xbox 360 and see if it still does it. Lingwo
My router was a pain to get an open NAT, it is a cheap linksys router. What i had to do was set a static IP on the xbox and then forward to ports like that.
bob_c_b
If it's a DLink or Netgear with recent firmware you can releax the NAT policy slightly (debatable is this has meaningful security implications for home users). Haven't used a recent Linksys, setting may exist on those routers as well. Port forwarding to a reserved IP is probably the best 'first' step. +Mystic MVC Posted December 22, 2009 MVC Share Posted December 22, 2009 Do you have a modem connected to that router? Modems can act like a 2nd router which means you have to jump through more hoops when considering your NAT.
bob_c_b
Mystic is right, in the US AT&T DSL connections all ship with a modem that does NAT out of the box. You have to get into the modem interface and force it into bridge mode to eliminate the second NAT. I'm assuming this isn't limited to just AT&T in the US so it's worth a look. Even when I completely unplug everything except for the xbox, then turn off the router at the wall in order to restart it, the problem persists. My router was a pain to get an open NAT, it is a cheap linksys router. What i had to do was set a static IP on the xbox and then forward to ports like that. I've given the xbox a static IP and forwarded the necessary ports. I shouldn't need to do that when I've added xbox to the DMZ, but I tried it just in case.. nothing seems to work :( If it's a DLink or Netgear with recent firmware you can releax the NAT policy slightly (debatable is this has meaningful security implications for home users). Haven't used a recent Linksys, setting may exist on those routers as well. Port forwarding to a reserved IP is probably the best 'first' step. It's a dlink DIR-615. I recently upgraded my broadband connection and got a new modem and router with it. My old router works fine, but seems slower? It could just be my imagination. As my top download speed is 50mbps the old router is capable of that speed, but the wireless N router seems to give me better speeds. Do you have a modem connected to that router? Modems can act like a 2nd router which means you have to jump through more hoops when considering your NAT. Yeah there's a modem connected, but my NAT becomes open if I connect the xbox directly to the modem.

I did not resolve this issue until I bought a new router, the Netgear WNDR3700. End of story.
+Mystic MVC Posted December 22, 2009 MVC Share Posted December 22, 2009 Yeah there's a modem connected, but my NAT becomes open if I connect the xbox directly to the modem. Yes it normally would. Unfortunately when you through in an actual router that complicates things for your modem which was working just fine before. You need to put either the router or modem into bridge mode, effectively eliminating the "2nd" router scenario.

Wikipedia seems to think there's no need to set up bridge mode for wired networks?
.KICK
I have the same router, DLink 615 and I fixed it by not assigning it an IP in the router but setting it up at 192.168.0.113 on the Xbox and DMZing that! It pretty much works now. Used to be a pain. But one day started working again. I also found that Xbox 360 via Wi-Fi would always give a moderate NAT but Ethernet was fine :s It is just the rubbish router Virgin Media supplies us with I'm afraid. Had a Netgear with them last year in my previous property, was much better.
MightyJordan
Hmm, that's a weird issue. I've got the same router as you (I upgraded to Virgin Media 50Mb too), and my NAT was Open as soon as I connected everything up. I didn't have to change any settings at all. I did have IP reservation set up in my router so only my xbox's mac address could obtain that IP, but I removed that.. it's the same problem either way. My old netgear router works fine with an open nat, but it does seem to be a bit slower, which kinda defeats the object of me getting the 50mb! Hmm, that's a weird issue. I've got the same router as you (I upgraded to Virgin Media 50Mb too), and my NAT was Open as soon as I connected everything up. I didn't have to change any settings at all. So strange :( I've opened my NAT at least five times on my old router, so I'm 99.99999% sure I'm not doing anything wrong. Latest firmware and everything. I think I'm either going to have to live with a moderate nat or get a new router.
dragon2611
To the best of my knowledge VM cable modems do not do NAT (unless they've added it recently but i don't think they have), they provide a bridge between the Cable and Ethernet interface, the VM network will then assign the first connected device the modem sees an IP via DHCP (if you change devices connected to the modem, reboot it)

The problem is we need to be able to use the PC and xbox at the same time, otherwise I would just switch the cables in the back of the modem. .KICK
You could reset the router with pushing a pin in at the back so its all fresh, there could be something small causing it. I have not tried this however.
Tarvis123
Generally it's not a good idea to have UPnP, DMZ, and Port Forwarding all set up for the same network interface. This could cause problems, and usually it's sufficient enough to just have UPnP or DMZ set up. Like you I had nat problems on my xbox until I went into my modem settings and set it to bridge mode. How to do this depends on your modem, but you need to access your modem settings like you would a router, so you would probably need to connect to the modem directly and open it's IP in your web browser. Find out the login information, then look for bridge settings. However you could always try setting up your router as a simple switch, but I wouldn't really recommend this. If the above fails, have you tried a 30/30/30 reset of your router?
