For me pro-tools and nuendo are the stuff of dreams, for those on a budget try REAPER, it's cheap, powerful, has a great community and even has books written for it.

Last August somebody from acousticguitarforums sold me a really nice 97' Seagull S6 for $200 including hard case. I was convinced I'd be able to figure it out, but I still don't get it. I play piano by ear... Anything I hear, I can eventually play. But with guitar...man, what the heck! I don't understand it at all. I love the way it sounds, the action is pretty nice, but the only things I can play are simple chords and goofy little things I've memorized. Gotta stare intently at the fretboard just to hit the right strings. Even then, I'm not really that good.

If there was a way to translate the strings/fretboard into piano keys, I think I'd improve like crazy. But all I see is lines... LINES! And more lines.

Pro-tools and Nuendo IMHO are the most intuative and most powerful programs out there. I do pass through to both Reason and Reaktor using vst for a lot of effects though, but prefer to do the bulk of the work in pro tools. I'm really glad that in version 8 they worked on improving midi. MIDI was always Pro Tools' weak point, and it really isn't anymore (it's actually better than most dedicated high end MIDI programs now). Pro tools is even easier for me to use because of my DIGI002 mixer. You can do everything quickly and easily in the software, but it's even quicker on the mixer. Of course it was pricey...

The only downside to Pro-tools is you need to have the hardware connected in order to use it. This is a pain because it means I either have to buy an mbox for something cheap and light to lug around with a laptop, or I can't use it on the go at all (which I currently don't do because the 002 is the only pro tools hardware I own).

I do think when you start with Pro-tools, even if you're used to something else, it seems a bit overwhelming, but once you get used to how they arranged the menus and the buttons (they really do make sense), then you're fine. The only software that really still trips me up occasionally is Reaktor.

Since I mentioned Nuendo earlier, I'll expand a bit upon it. It's very similar to pro-tools 7 (8 added a lot of nice features). It does not, however require special hardware, though the software alone is selling for 1800 US right now, which for that you can get a much nicer Pro-tools setup. Value for money is not there with Nuendo, even though it is a very good, powerful program.

I did some pricing on those tools and they are probably more than I need right now, but thanks for the information. For now I guess I'll continue using my MR-8/HD mixing capabilities and use Audacity for the minor post-production tasks I require.

Thanks again for the reviews!

ya, audacity is actually pretty impressive for a free program. I think the cheapest paid program I would recommend would be Acid Pro 7. The problem with that recommendation is you could get an mbox which includes pro-tools le for the same price (heck, some mboxes are cheaper).

There seems to be a big gap in the market for prices between the free-50 dollar range and the 300+ dollar range. You can do most of what you can in the high end programs with the free ones, just not as quickly and efficiently.

It's all I use as well. Everything else seems way too complicated. Audacity, just plug in, set to record and go.

Nice rig!! How do you like the Roland? I've used a Boss GT-10 and a Line6 PODXT and found them just too complicated. How authentic is the actual guitar modeling? Was your Strat custom made for you, or did you build it yourself from parts?

Dragging up an old post that I forgot to answer.

I love the VG-99, it's perfect for my needs. I think the VG-99 is probably a little easier to use then the GT-10 as it's got a bigger screen. Still, if you find it too complicated, the VG-99 is probably not for you as it has a ton of features. The guitar modelling varies from model to model, but had gotten better through each iteration of the V-Guitar System (VG-8 to VG-8EX to VG-88 to VG-99, I've only owned the VG-88 and the VG-99). I'll put it like this, I use the virtual guitars inside the VG-99 exclusively when playing live, and I don't beleive anyone in the crowd knows the difference.

As for the guitar, it was custom built for me. It's not a Custom Shop Strat, just Strat shapped. It was built by a luthier here in Brisbane. It's kind of a hodge-podge of different things I like, thin necks, smallish radius, humbuckers and single coils (via splitting), heavy body wood (mahogany), rosewood fretboad, roland gk pickup....the list goes on. I found it difficult to find a off the shelf guitar that I really loved, so I had one built just for me, and I love it. I am thinking of getting the new Moog E1-M though, very tempting.

I just picked this bad boy up for $400. A Peavey 5150 with bias mod. Most brutal amp for metal of all time. I don't have a cab for it right now but I played it for a bit through my bros Mesa cab and it sounds unreal. I'm sooo stoaked as I've been looking for a good deal on one of these for a long time :D

This is really the only notable item in my guitar collection (note, picture is not mine, but is the exact same as mine).

I don't have a lot of information on this guitar. Got it off of ebay when I first started playing a few years ago. It was made in Japan during the late 1970s for UK import. Has a maple through neck and walnut "wings". The small switch near the knobs is a coil split.

Where do you guys get your tabs from? I mostly get mine from official tab books.

I get them mostly from Ultimate Guitar Tabs and I use the Guitar Pro software.

Sweet fancy Moses, nice rig!! That JP7 is killer!! I played a JP6 at the guitar shop a few weeks ago and it was one of the nicest playing guitars I've ever played.

I play mostly metal with a bit of classic rock and blues.

Been playing guitar for 20 years mainly punk/rock but some other stuff too. Used to use strats but over the years i started to use custom builds of my own or friends, it's always great when you can pick and choose all the bits and bobs :D

Always done my best to play through my JCM900 Marshall stack live but at home use a Vs100 Marshall mini stack as you get smooth crunch at lower volumes.

The last two albums i played on though i didn't use Marshalls at all (can't quite remember what i used) when i remember what i did use i'll post it up :D
